The University of Florida is sending letters to more than 11,000 current and former students to notify them that their Social Security numbers, names and addresses were accidentally posted online.
University officials said Tuesday that the privacy breach was recently discovered during a routine systems audit.
The information became available when former student employees of the Office for Academic Support and Institutional Service, or OASIS, program created online records of students participating in the program between 2003 and 2005. The information has been removed.
School officials said the notification letters were being sent to about 11,300 students whose information is believed to have been compromised, but they were unable to find contact information for about 570 people.

So what do you think? Accident...or not?
Is the University of South Florida anywhere near the land of the hanging chad? Just wondering.
institutions and databases are hell on earth.

Identity theft is easy to prevent. I should be able to DEMAND that my identity is PROPERLY authenticated by a process of MY choosing. The credit reporting agencies don’t have a right to set the rules on my personal identification procedures. As it is now, you have to prove you aren’t the one making that credit card purchase when the burden should be on them to prove you WERE the one. If someone wants to issue easy credit they shouldn’t be able to do so in a way that forces ME to help.
Luckily it was Florida. Most other schools have students and graduates with jobs and good credit scores.
Especially when you take into account The Wayback Machine.
It'd be interesting to see if it's still cached, but what's the URL?
If it was a Mexican with allegiance to Mexico, I would say he/she’s only helping them get the SS # they would have had to pay for otherwise.
Hmmmm...I was a research assistant in a lab in the UF College of Electrical Engineering. It was over 20 years ago, but still a concern,
