Sandinista Takeover
IBD Editorial ^ | June 12, 2008

United Nations: It's said that the U.N. is only as good as its members. But putting a Nicaraguan dinosaur communist at the presidency of the General Assembly takes it all a step lower. Already, the America-bashing is back.

Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, Nicaragua's foreign minister until his Marxist Sandinista party was booted in 1990, has now got a new gig leading the U.N. General Assembly.

Oh, lucky us. A Maryknoll priest of the old liberation theology school, the 75-year-old rifle-and-cassock radical is famous for taking the U.S. to the International Court of Justice in The Hague in 1986 over President Reagan's arming of Contra freedom fighters resisting d'Escoto's Cuban-style forced communism. His politics discredited, he ought to be out on his ear with his class-warfare philosophy expiring in the ashcan of history.

Instead, the three-way election in Nicaragua in 2006 brought back ex-Sandinista dictator Daniel Ortega and d'Escoto with him.

Already, d'Escoto's started fulminating against America.

He's blasted "acts of aggression, such as those occurring in Afghanistan and Iraq," in a clear shot at the U.S.

It’s ok, Barrak will take the wind out of his sails, probably offer them economic aid and a nuclear reactor,
for domestic electrical production only.

McCain isn’t all bad - he wants to minimize the UN and create a real international organization of fewer responsible states in its stead.

It looks like, in the modern World, that I am compelled to support every idiot who dislikes me. Why are we forced to pay for the U.N.?

“putting a Nicaraguan dinosaur communist at the presidency of the General Assembly takes it all a step lower.”

Yes, the DIms offer the same thing with a RCP (Revolutionary Communist Party) candidate by training and association....Obamas’ New Party (one of his backing institutions) is the equivalent of the RCP for practical purposes. Maybe the Dims should just come out with the Newcommarx Party if they want to offer real ‘change’ and ‘progress’....no platform announcement needed..they have had it for decades. A better public understanding would ensue.

venzuela’s chavez has been over there

investing petro dollars in subversive community groups in nicaragua.

the purpose is to diminish democracy and to re-establish communist party control over villages.

Keep in mind that Daniel Ortega won the Presidency of Nicaragua with only about 36% of the vote.

The conservatives there screwed themselves by running multiple candidates which split the vote.

He doesn’t represent most Nicaraguans. Perhaps they’ll be smart in the next election cycle.

The left is not stupid. They don't hold elections once they win, to the left when they win it's permanent, it's only when they lose that it's temporary.

There was another historical candidate in the 1930's who got "just 36%" of the vote. Guess what? There were no more elections after that.

Ortega’s presidency on shaky ground after Farc comments - June 13, 2008 - Nicaragua's leader is now coming under increased fire after he eulogised Manuel Marulanda, the fallen founder and leader of Colombian Marxist rebel group Farc. His popularity has plunged since he took power last January, from an approval rating of 64% just after he took over the reins to 21% just over a year into his presidency. A more recent poll, released last month, showed 64% of Nicaraguans believe Ortega is trying to institute a dictatorship.

Mounting evidence of his sympathies towards Farc in recent weeks appears to have seen the president propel another wave of discontent. Suspicions among his opponents - who already suggested he resign over recent strikes by truck drivers protesting rising fuel prices and riots caused by the increasing cost of food - have also been fermented, while political in-fighting within his own party has reached fever pitch.

After the announcement of Marulanda's death late last month, Ortega was quoted as paying tribute to the man who started Farc (considered a terrorist group in Colombia) in 1964 and led the group during its battles with successive Colombian governments.

"I say to our Farc brothers and sisters that we must carry on battling in order to achieve peace in Colombia," he told reporters in Montevideo on the day Marulanda's death was confirmed.

If Ortega was going to pull that stunt, he would have done so when he was President the first time.

They will have another election, and he will be voted out again.
