Mr. Ensign dismissed reports that contributions to the Republicans by disgruntled small donors are down this year. He maintained the party's contributor base is intact. The Republican Party long has boasted that it is the party of small donors while the Democratic Party has had to rely far more on wealthy contributors to finance election campaigns.
He said the Republican Party never suffered a loss in small donors, only a shrinkage in the net amount of money raised - a decline that he said was not the result of small donors being disgusted with excessive Republican spending in Congress but of the party having been mailing "bad" lists that had driven up fundraising costs. That problem has been eliminated, he said.
ASSOCIATED PRESS Sen. John Ensign, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, sees 2008 as a tough year for Republican candidates. "If you have an 'R' in front of your name, you better run scared."
Senate Republicans must defend 23 seats this year compared to 12 for Democrats.
Mr. Ensign said soaring gasoline prices offer a "huge opportunity" for Republicans who will argue that the Democrats have been blocking domestic production of oil from Alaska, from deep-water drilling off the U.S. continental shelf, and from gargantuan shale oil reserves.
He said his party must keep the Senate as a firewall to stop costly legislation that he predicted Democrats will try to enact if Sen. Barack Obama gains the White House and his party boosts its current 236-199 majority in the House.
Mr. Ensign said the 10 most competitive Senate races are in Alaska, Colorado, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon and Virginia - all but Louisiana now being Republican seats.

I was thinking that too, but then the word ‘deception’ came to mind.
I will not give a dime to the turncoat McShamesty. He mocks all I stand for in the USA. I stand for strong borders, low taxes, anti liberal judges, energy independence, etc. He stands for cap and trade, open borders, blocking conservative judges, no drilling for our own oil, etc. The RNC made it clear by using winner takes all primary in ultra liberal states that an ultra liberal “republican “ would win.
Got a call yesterday. The fundraiser said the party needed funds to get the truth out about Obama, said nothing about McCain. I told him two things: first, a lot of sources were getting out the truth about Obama, and second, if and when McCain showed his loyalty to conservatives I would consider making a contribution, but not until then. In the meantime McCain could continue to rely on his RINO friends to fund his campaign. The fundraiser kept trying to focus on Obama and I hung up on him. Sounds like they aren’t getting traction selling McCain.
They did not discover the bad list until they tried contacting their base.
Same here. I’m re-registering as Independent at this point.
And in campaigning, I don’t want to hear about you talking about why the other guy is bad. I want to hear you talking about what you bring to the table that is good. My vote doesn’t go to who gives the best smack talk.
If the GOP would grab the energy independence issue (i.e., drill now, drill here, build refineries & nukes) and make it their own, they would get plenty of dollars and may even make some gains in the senate and house.
Heck, the only acknowledgment that they made was the elimination of the in-house fund raisers.
That's it. Blame the disgruntled fund raisers. If they knew people were upset about the rewarding lawbreakers, I'm sure they would have suggested to Bush it wasn't a good idea, and made sure McCain was left to his own resources at the beginning of his candidacy.

It is essential to hold 41 seats in the senate.
I’ve also given 2300 to McCain.
I will be giving more to other “rinos” this year.
I’m smart, have a lot of money saved, healthy, adapatable, creative and well educated. I will do fine no matter what happens in November.
As to the rest of you, if Obama wins and has 60 seats in the senate, those of you who are less fortunate will be in dire straits.
