A woman was shot 13 times by the father of her two young boys today, and the man then took the children and fled, authorities said. The shooting occurred about 10:40 a.m. at a home in the 10000 block of McBroom Street, near the 210 Freeway just west of Sunland.
The woman, who was not identified, is in serious condition at a local hospital, police said. The father, Jose Luis Ortega, 27, and the woman got into an argument after she dropped the boys off at the house, said Los Angeles police Officer Julianne Sohn.
Ortega then pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and shot the woman 13 times, Sohn said. He left the home with the two children, possibly headed to Mexico, she said.
An Amber Alert has been issued for the two boys: Diego Fabian Ortega, 5, and Luis Gonzalo Ortega, 3, who were taken by their father in a black 1998 Ford Ranger pickup truck. The license plate number is 7Z19738.

Most sources, including the one linked, say the woman was shot “multiple times” but not how many. They must have changed the original headline.

He was last seen wearing a white shirt and jeans.

I hope you’re joking. The man was armed and dangerous. She goes to the house, drops the kids off to him, they have an argument, he shoots her 13 times, takes the children and goes to Mexico! Did it say anything in the article about her demanding money and getting it? This is horrible, nothing to joke about!

The children’s surname is the same as the father’s.
But yes, I’m also sick of so much of the most violent crimes in SoCal are Hispanic. There is a sub-culture within Hispanics that is built on criminal behavior and they are proud of it.

The Nevada Highway Patrol has canceled an AMBER Alert for two missing Southern California children, but the whereabouts of the two youths and their father remain unknown. The AMBER Alert was issued by the NHP on Sunday afternoon, just hours after three-year-old Luis Ortega and his five-year-old brother Diego were allegedly abducted. Los Angeles County Sheriff spokesperson Byron Ward says 27-year-old Jose Ortega allegedly shot his estranged wife in Sunland, California. The woman is in serious but stable condition. Police say Ortega fled with the boys in a pickup truck that was later found abandoned. Authorities now fear Ortega may have fled to Mexico.
Last night, they were thinking he might head to Vegas if not to Mexico (see my post upthread). Reportedly, during his cell phone conversation with police, he affirmed that the boys are with him and “okay.” But, who knows?
Yeah, the truck was found in Lancaster.
Now, his vehicle and/or mode of transport is unknown.
Mexico seems a likely destination.
Poor children, this really makes me angry.

News just mentioned that the truck was abandoned in a “desolate” area. I’m thinking he would need an accomplice in another vehicle to pick up him and the kids at that point. His mother is pleading for him to turn himself in or at least turn the kids over to her.

Yes, Ortega has fled to Mexico but we will get him and he will face justice. He will face the mother too, because she is going to live after being shot 12 or more times. We got the Marine who shot his pregnant girlfriend and fled to Mexico. We will get Ortega.
