In a study of hospital discharge data for the State of Texas, whistleblowing Catholic medical researchers found that Catholic hospitals reported at least 9,684 cases of sterilizations and 39 legally induced abortions from 2000-2003. While sterilizations and abortions are legal in the United States, they are considered immoral by the Catholic Church and many Catholics.

This Catholic couldn't agree more.
An hysterectomy is a sterilizing procedure, but not immoral if medically necessary.
Likewise, performing an abortion on an already-deceased-from-natural-causes unborn child is also sometimes medically necessary.
Perhaps these were abortions of live children or perhaps they are running a vasectomy factory - but the data needs to be analyzed properly.
I agree. More research on this before anything else.
They just had a case in West Virginia (I believe) where Catholic Charities sent a 16 yr old Guatemalan girl off for an abortion. The bishops have, of course, “issued a statement.” But no heads have rolled, to my knowledge.
Catholic Charities is a left-wing group that pays no attention to Catholic teaching. Many of the hospital boards and management are the same way, and because they receive federal money for abortion and sterilization, it’s fine with them.
Nothing’s going to happen until the bishops fire people, if those people are under their command, or sever ties with the institutions if they wont punish these employees and change their policies.
The Catholic hospitals are too addicted to government transfer payments to stop this.
This one, too. Having served for nearly a decade on the board of our local Catholic hospital, I can tell you this is an aberation and the local bishop needs to get on the ball. From time to time the non-Catholic doctors would start to press the tubal ligation case. So their secular minds could grasp it, I'd try to explain it with a baseball analogy....the American League allows the Designated Hitter and the National League doesn't....that's the way it is, and that's the way it's going to stay. You want to be a Designated Hitter, you better go play in the American League....period.

Hysterectomy is the second most common surgery for women in the US and I’ve never heard that it is ever done for reasons other than medical necessity (add overectomy to that as well). Are they listing ovo/hysterectomies with sterilizations?
What influence do all of you have on your diocese, if you're catholic, to do an investigation and, as one of you said fire the appropriate personal, and not find a scapegoat?
If these sterilizations were legitimate, then so be it.

Good! One of the problems with Catholic Charities, in itself, is that its programs accept state monies, and sometimes I’m sure it’s pretty easy to just start accepting state standards in general.
