(Ex-Lax) Cake-prank kids aren't laughing now (NY)
ny daily news ^ | 06.19.08 | JENNY MERKIN and TRACY CONNOR

Brooklyn teen Quashon Burton thought bringing a laxative-laced cake to school would be "funny" - but he's not laughing now.   After two teachers were sickened and he was hit with an assault charge, the senior is worried his whole future is collapsing like a half-baked souffle. "I'm pretty scared," Burton told the Daily News Thursday outside his home in Brownsville.  "I didn't mean to have this whole thing blow out of proportion. I thought it would be a senior prank that everyone would think is funny."

Burton, 17, and pals Tiara Peoples and Kenny Ramirez got the idea to bake Dulcolax tablets into a cake from a similar gag featured on MTV's "High School Stories."   Slices were handed out last Thursday at the Brooklyn School for Global Studies in Cobble Hill, and two teachers wound up in the hospital. The three were suspended, and six days later, prosecutors charged them with felony assault on a teacher, which carries up to seven years in prison.  Burton, a self-confessed "class clown" who has done plenty of time in detention, said he realizes his arrest is no joke.

He had planned to enter community college, find a sales job and take a plumbing course. Now he's worried he might end up in jail. "I live with my mom. She's kind of terrified because she doesn't really know what's going to happen," he said.   "My mom struggled all her life. Not too many in my family have been to college. I just wanted to create a better life for myself."

and two teachers wound up in the hospital.

Because of a little laxative in a cake? Not sure I buy it. Wonder if they ended up in the hospital before or after they discovered what was in the cake.

This is an upsetting story. What the kids did was stupid, which is not at all unusual for 17 year old seniors. But on the otherhand this is Brownsville, where most kids don’t get to be 17 year old seniors graduating from high school. I hope the teachers are ok, and that the prosecution is dropped for community service. We don’t need another black kid who has possibilities ending up in the slammer.

Somebody was stealing a high school class mates lunch out of his locker. His mom made a cake with a laxative in the frosting and put a couple of pieces in his lunch. The thefts stopped.

I read another version of this story a few days ago, and the teachers were quoted as saying the cake tasted like insecticide.

The dosage was uncontrolled and was probably much higher than recommended. It could cause severe gastric pain that could be mistaken for a much more serious problem.

The kids don’t deserve prison time, but they should spend the summer working their butts off doing community service. Preferably cleaning bedpans in a nursing home.

Unless someone was seriously injured, they shouldn’t have their lives ruined for a thoughtless prank.

He didn’t MEAN to have “this whole thing” blow out of proportion?! It’s out of proportion to throw his ass in jail for putting 2 people in the hospital. And you even think that community service would be enough? Maybe he can write a book in jail - Quashon’s laws of proportionality.

it’s either mind over matter or the teachers knew what happened and wanted to build a good workman’s comp. case.

Then why the hell did they eat it?

it was tested and the only thing the lab found were the ex lax pills. See what mind over matter can do.

The teachers would require hospitalization for dehydration and also for testing if the punk didn’t fess up right away about what he used to poison the teachers. He admitted to the laxative, but he potentially could have put anything in the cake. How is anyone to know for sure?

One of my aunts “took” another aunt’s (her sister) boyfriend away- as the story goes my grandmother gave the scorned sister the lecture about how you can’t take a man away if he doesn’t want to go and told her to basically suck it up and be polite to them when he was at the house. She very sweetly made them homemade fudge with ex-lax in it. The boy never dated either one of them again and they forgave each other so it made a terriffic family story. As the story goes my grandmother used what happened to explain the lesson that actions have consequences and the aunt that laced the fudge didn’t get into trouble.
