I for one never heard him say that or ever seen it in print anywhere. Could you provide a newssource link to where one might see that for himself. If you can then I will stand corrected.

I have always believed that our border must be secure and that the federal government has utterly failed in its responsibility to ensure that it is secure. If we have learned anything from the recent immigration debate, it is that Americans have little trust that their government will honor a pledge to do the things necessary to make the border secure. As president, I will secure the border....

McCain isn't above flip-flopping either.

We stopped them from passing amnesty with McCain in the Senate. We will stop them with McCain in the White House.

Bush would have signed the bill. McCain will sign the bill. Bush pushed the bill. McCain might push the bill.

No change. Except we can replace McCain in the Senate with an anti-Amnesty senator.

McCain can’t do anything by himself, and amnesty is just one of those things that we are going to have to fight at the congressional level, just like we did before.

Given McCain’s track record, can anyone here give me a compelling reason why I should believe ANYTHING he says?

You are absolutley correct! We are already seeing signs of our country gradually becoming Hispanic. Look ahead another ten years and you can visualize what is coming for us. I can’t believe the utter incompetance and stupidity of our leaders. No one cares, only to get elected. That’s the ticket. Never mind how it will destroy our country.

I have a friend that after the primary called me to see if she voted correctly on the propositions. While talking to her I asked who she voted for and she said....”McCain because he is against illegal immigration”. I thought I was gonna die laughing and then I told her that McCain was responsible for the amnesty bill we had just defeated.
Sadly, I think she is typical of most voters.

What did you expect him to tell La Raza?

Depending on the audience, McCain intentionally tries to mislead people on his position. He tells conservative audiences that he "got the message" on the 2007 bill so he will secure the borders and get a border state commission to cerify it. Very seldom do these audiences ask him how he intends to deal with the 12 to 20 million illegals here. When someone asks, he usually responds that he will round up the 2 million criminal aliens and deport them. If that doesn't work, he goes into we are all God's children and uses the example of deporting an illegal alien mother of a Marine in Iraq. He asks what kind of country would do that?

I followed the McCain campaign for four days each in SC and FL. I heard his stump speech many times. Wait until he speaks before La Raza in August. There will be plenty of gnashing of teeth on this site after he finishes there.

Even more sad, is the fact that these 30 plus Million Illegals granted amnesty, will vote Socialist/Democrat.

If any naive FReepers still think the country is evenly divided due to the results of 2000 and the 2004 elections, think about adding 30 million Democrats to the rolls of Democrats that steamrollered us in 2006.

Forget about close future political contests. It will become Socialist hard, or Socialist light. Which is what we are just beginning to see this election.

"We stopped them from passing amnesty with McCain in the Senate. We will stop them with McCain in the White House. "

It can be stopped regardless of who's in the White House. Sad that we have to fight 'our guy' on the issue though.

IMHO as long as the economy is teetering the way it is, I can't imagine an Amnesty/Immigration Reform being seriously discussed. NPR (I know) yesterday stated the "Latino community" was being "most hard hit" by sub-prime foreclosures. In the next two years they predict what amounts to an economic meltdown in the demographic. A large portion simply will not have any reason to stay in this country. Attrition will continue.

"He authors and sponsors the legislation."

While that is correct, it would be more accurate to say that McCain negotiated a compromise on an immigration bill with Kennedy.

As for 2006, the McCain-Kennedy compromise did not have enough votes for cloture, so the Hagel-Martinez compromise was piled on top of McCain-Kennedy and an additional 10 republicans voted for cloture(40 dems and 23 GOP).

Additionally, AgJobs was the template for McCain-Kennedy and it was negotiated between the growers and the union.

Amnesty passed in the Senate in 2006 [S 2611]. It was stopped in the House. It will pass again in the Senate in the 111th Congress. The battle will be fought in the House. I am not optimistic about our chances, but we must go down fighting.

Perhaps we should all stop filing/paying our taxes, and demand amnesty later...
