In Colorado, taxpayers have a tremendous amount of control over their own property taxes.
Thanks to the states Taxpayers Bill of Rights (TABOR), which stunts the growth of property taxes, those of us who own property in Eagle County shouldnt expect to see our taxes skyrocket at the same rate as our property values without voter approval.
This year, however, taxpayers rights were usurped by Gov. Bill Ritters decision to freeze the statewide school district property tax rate...
Not only was Ritters move a clear violation of the TABOR Amendment because it effectively raised taxes without voter approval, it didnt benefit many of the states school districts.
Gov. Ritter deserves to be chastised for violating the states own tax laws. But he should pursue changing the way the state funds education by proposing and placing on a ballot a measure that would give local voters more control over local schools.

No, he should be impeached and jailed for failure to follow the law, just like everyone. Anybody remember a little document called the Magna Carta, signed in England in 1215 AD? It was all about some silly little concept of the lords being subject to the same laws as the rest of us. It would be interesting to see the results if there were some way we could force the Democrats to take a stand on the Magna Carta today.
I'm so out of step with modern times that I think everyone should have to obey all the laws, especially if they supported them, passed them or are even just charged with enforcing them. Stupid me.
Now if all property owners could vote on whether to raise their property taxes, a large percentage of property in Eagle County is owned by people whose official residence is somewhere other than Vail.
No taxation without representation.

Bill Ritter has moved so far left, it’s unbelieveable.
This seems to be the thing about the Democrat Party- even if one is initially a sensible, well-meaning person, spend too much time there, they’ll go off the deep end. Bill Ritter is an example of that.
The voters wanted a Democrat for Governor. Now live with it. Maybe next election the voters will think. Maybe.
Of course, Auggie might’ve been bull$hitting folks all along into buying his “moderate” schtick. The CO GOP ought to be working overtime to exploit their good fortune in having this rodent moonbat Governor to reclaim the majority that should never have been lost.
I suspect he was there (far left) all along. Like most DemocRATS, he ran as one thing to be elected, but now he is paying his dues to those that financed his election.
When will people learn there is no such thing as a conservative DemocRAT? If they were conservative, they would be Republican...although it's hard to even find conservative Republicans any more.

How about Senator wannabee and BoulderBoy Mark Udall (D) suddenly voting FOR the Iraq-Afghanistan supplemental this week!

I've been working a lot this week and MISSED that tidbit of news!
Hmmm...is it to "appear" centrist, or was it the extension of unemployment benefits that swayed his vote?
I remember Salazar campaigned as a conservative, and many Republicans voted for him because they refused to vote for a "beer" man. HUGE mistake...
But right now I don't see anybody on the Republican side who could unseat him.
