During the week after Father’s Day, I received a number of interesting emails from readers asking me to write about the dearth of looting after the recent floods in Iowa. Specifically, they wanted me to write about the reason there was so much more looting in New Orleans after Katrina hit the “Chocolate City” in 2005. Of course, the problem involves so much more than race – a factor most people are thinking about, even if they won’t admit it...

It has to do with bankrupt culture. Once, black music gave us R&B, Gospel, Blues and Rock. Today, if you asked someone to give you an example of "black music" they would probably say "Rap". You do the math.

Wow, you have a chip on your shoulder. I take it you're a fan of Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Madonna? Aren't they paragons of "white" music? If you're going to accuse 40 million black Americans of having a "bankrupt culture" maybe you should pause a moment for some self-reflection.

It is about culture; a sub-culture that teaches that The Man has stolen things from you, so it is OK to steal things back.

Perhaps there were isolated cases of white people looting after the flooding in Iowa but I am sure that 99% of the people in Iowa were taught, as I was, that if it does not belong to you then you do not take it. PERIOD! (from whom it belongs, no matter what the circumstances are) The idea that we are only taking from “the man” or a “business that can afford it” is disturbing. It a result of the liberal philosophy of entitlement, taught in schools, the only difference is that there is no government middleman in the transaction. Interesting also is all the ads for security systems or drug rehab. have used only whites ..... imagine a picture of a black guy in a mask doing a home break in or talking about his drug rehab clinic .....

Let’s face facts; All of us know the reason that we do not see images of looters in Iowa. It is that the racist news media won’t show images of whites looting while they will show images of blacks like they did in New Orleans.
WOW- I got sick writing that even though I know it was sarcasm.
The real reason is that the kind of people you have in Iowa are very different than the the type in New Orleans. Or at least most of the people in Iowa are different from many in New Orleans.
We all have to be PC now. I wonder why this has not been mentioned in MSM?

We had looting here in the Missouri Ozarks after recent tornados. A friend had her house demolished. While she tried to find her belongings, other people picked through whatever was blown around. They even tried to dig up plants from her yard.

And dead people are dead people. More Americans are killed each year by hepatitis than died in 9/11 and Pearl Harbor, combined.

Am I trying to minimize the importance of 9/11 or Pearl Harbor? No. But don't manipulate statistics to try to minimize the impact of lynching, which was a form of domestic terrorism. The power of terrorism on a population far surpasses its numerical toll.

Where are all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for help in restoring Iowa/Illinois and helping the folks affected by the floods?

Where is all the media asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn’t solved the problem? Asking where the FEMA trucks (and trailers) are?

Why isn’t the Federal Government relocating Iowa/Illinois people to free hotels in Chicago?

When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed?

Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks?

Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen television sets?

When will we hear anyone say that he wants to rebuild a “vanilla” Iowa/Illinois, because that’s the way God wants it?

Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of cannibalism?

Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural people?

Why, in 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa/Illinois flooding ever again?

White people generally don't loot after a disaster, they look to help their neighbors and those who have suffered. Look at all the people who gave contributions to the people who suffered from Katrina and look at the people who looted and whined and asked for handouts.

Nope, I just hate rap music and all that it glorifies. If you can see a way in which treating women like "hoes", glorifiying gun violence, and drug use is somehow superior to the Ink Spots mellow crooning, the dulcit tones of The Platters, or the heartfelt joy of Mahalia Jackson, then you are a better man than I am. I am more impressed by people that can compose beautiful music than those who can rhyme under time pressure.

And completely aside from the issue of the impressive and beautiful music black culture has given us in the past, when was the last time you heard of a barbershop quartet being involved in putting a cap in someone's @$$?

Pointless to talk about lynching 150 years ago, as you noted in your original reply. There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.

I remarked to my wife, as we watched the coverage of Iowa, of the cooperative workline of people filling up the sacks of sand in an orderly manner. There were some teenagers, young men and women, but older, fat,grandmotherly types were in the same line. They were not bitching. They kept up with the younger people and a few even had smiles on their faces. Where was Wolfe Blitzer saying, "But....they are just so white." Those people exemplified the pioneer spirit and rugged individualism to deal with whatever nature threw at them. They were Americans.
