BAGHDAD, June 23 -- Two U.S. soldiers were killed and three were wounded Monday when a council member opened fire on them after a meeting in a small town south of Baghdad, the U.S. military said.
An Iraqi interpreter also was wounded in the shooting in Salman Pak Nahia, which is about 20 miles south of Baghdad, said Capt. Charles Calio, a U.S. military spokesman.
Two Salman Pak residents identified the assailant, who was killed, as council member Raed Hmood Ajil.
Residents Rafi Suleiman, 39, and Abu Dawood said in phone interviews that Ajil, a Sunni tribal leader, opened fire on the soldiers without provocation.
Suleiman said the soldiers were in town for the opening of a park built with U.S. funds.
Also Monday, the U.S. military announced that a Canadian man working as an interpreter for the U.S. military in Iraq was sentenced to five months of confinement after pleading guilty in the stabbing of a colleague in February.

May God look over those who sacrificed all and allow them into His Kingdom, and may He look over the families of those killed. Amen.
I imagine the DemocRAT buffoons in Congress will now demand one of their specialty “hearings” be conducted to see if Raed Hmood Ajil’s U.S. Constitutional rights were violated when he was killed.
Prayers for them and theirs.
Agreeing with you, in Jesus’ Holy Name, Amen
News from Iraq. It’s been a while.
Was his dumb ass killed in return?
Two Salman Pak residents identified the assailant, who was killed, as council member Raed Hmood Ajil.
MOAB his entire village.
I am so sick of this crap.
If they don't fear consequences for their cowardice and murders, then they will continue their terrorism.
That is the way Mohammed founded this cult, and that is the way it shall always be with these people.
Mohammedanism is rife with corruption, violence, theft, murder, rape and destruction.
Brute force is the only way to keep them under control.
Even Saddam Hussein knew that.
Ping.
Thanks. I made my comment before taking the time to read the whole depressing story.
I am curious about the council member motive. He had to know that his chances of survival were zero.
Joining you in that prayer. Amen.
Yes and shame on those who are going on repeating that this war was and is “UNNECESSARY” ie that these brave soldiers are useless and dying for nothing.
I would like to ask to a wanabe POTUS whose name begin with O what is, according to him, a “NECESSARY” war.
Looking for the votes of the anti-war crowds doesn’t justify such a treason
I’m thinking things didn’t go this guy’s way during the meeting. What a senseless way to blow off steam, or commit suicide.
My sympathies go out to the family and friends of these men.
I know some folks will say that a MOAB should be used on the perp’s family, but I think other Iraqis are probably upset about this also.
It’s just a senseless thing to do, take the lives of people who are trying to help build a better nation and community for your people.
Sudden jihad syndrome?
Oh yah! Thats the ticket!
I hate it when that happens!
“I am curious about the council member motive. He had to know that his chances of survival were zero.”
Current low U.S. troop death rate (God bless them) is the measure of our victory. Given this and the fact that killing U.S. troops has become so difficult, the demand for for it has gone way up and a move like this is the only way these worthless dogs can have any chance of slowing our success.
His entire village would include Rafi Suleiman, Abu Dawood, and a lot of people who are working side by side with us against terrorists and baathist hardliners. Wiping out his village would do us far more harm than it could ever do him.
It is and has always been the only way to deal with these savages, Any attempt at reconciliation is viewed as weakness and only drives them to further acts of violence.
