If I understand aright, it's not a question of his being a citizen, but whether he was born in the U.S. I believe it's a requirement in the Constitution that the President be born here.

Not so sure about that. It seems Thomas Sowell has entered the fray.

In short, "Barack Obama is not legally a U.S. natural-born citizen according to the law on the books at the time of his birth."

I think this is a non-issue, but if Sowell's reasoning is valid, there will be a court case if Obama wins.

But is he a natural born citizen? If this is the case how many US citizens are there in Vietnam, France, Germany, Britain, Japan, the Philippines (WW2)?

I'm not sure I believe that Obama was born anywhere other than in Hawaii, but if he were, his mother being a citizen does not automatically make him one in this case. See quote from the article below.

Research has since uncovered the law, in force at the time of Obama's birth, that were he to have been born in another country, his young American mother's youth extended time abroad would not suffice to make him a "natural born citizen." The constitution requires the POTUS to be a "Natural born ctiizen" though. If he was born in Kenya for example, he would not be a natural born citizen...therefore unqualified for the presidency.

Not so! His Mother needed to be a resident of the US for a certain period of time and she was a couple years short. The laws at the time excluded her from passing citizenship in a foreign country. This is why they are so intent that Obumma was born in Hawaii.
