Barack Obama May Recruit Defence Chief Robert Gates
Timesonline ^ | 06.29.2008 | Sarah Baxter

In defiance of traditional party labels, Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, may ask the defence secretary of President George W Bush to stay on if he wins the White House.

Obama’s top foreign policy and national security advisers are pressing the case for keeping Robert Gates at the Pentagon after he won widespread praise for his performance. The move would be in keeping with Obama’s desire to appoint a cabinet of all the talents.

After appealing for unity with former rival Hillary Clinton and her supporters and big donors last week, Obama, 46, is turning his attention to wooing Republicans and independent voters who may be concerned that he lacks the experience to be trusted with America’s defence.

Richard Danzig, an adviser to Obama on national security and a former navy secretary, said: “My personal position is Gates is a very good secretary of defence and would be an even better one in an Obama administration.”

And Gates may tell the juvenile Senator to grow-up before asking such things of adults.

Ain’t a dime’s worth of difference between the Demopublicans and Republicrats. The same revolving door power elite rules both parties.

Getting serious now, what does Obama know about defending our country and/or foreign policy.

My latest Obama link:

Obama is not going to leave Iraq. I wish he would but he won’t. He is already hedging. As I said, the differences between the two major parties are paper thin, rhetoric for the sheeple to the contrary.

Despite what the “media” would like us to believe, this wouldn’t be “historic.” Slick Willie already did this with Bill Cohen.

I find it very disturbing that this empty nothing without resume presumes to be selecting folks upon whom my future and the future of my children and grand children rests.

I feel that things are going to get very ugly.

I agree with you totally. I’ll also bet a dollar to a donut that BO will appoint a “gay” man or woman to the job as Secretary of Defense. That’s our future.

Marxist organizations? Many libertarians and conservatives are antiwar. Heck, back in the late 1990s most people on this site were antiwar when it came to Clinton’s war in Kosovo. On the other hand, many leftists are pro-war when the rubber hits the road. Mark my works. As the Gates overture indicates, Obama will keep us involved in the Iraq war (now longer than WWII!) when he takes office. Ain’t a dime’s worth of difference between the two major parties. Both believe in policing the world.

That tends to be the difference between the left and the right Captain. The left is for any war that is not in America's interest but makes them feel good. That is why the left was for Kosovo but against Iraq. The right tends to be ok with wars that advance American interests like Iraq but not feel good wars like Kosovo. The Paleos like Pat Buchanan and the faaaarrrr Right Lew Rockwell types have opposed Iraq but I haven't seen that much here.

This is a hopeful sign for us. If Obama wants Secretary Gates to stay on, it's a sign that his faction doesn't have anyone with military and political experience who wants the post of Secretary of Defense. Under Obama, who has a naive point of view towards international terrorism and rogue states, any such job would be a career ender for competent people. Obama’s term would be as disastrous as Carter for both the United States and the Democratic Party.

How did those Democrats paint themselves into this corner? Oh, yeah. Hillary. Obama was Not Hillary.

re Kosovo, Clintoon was on the wrong side, the side we are fighting in Afgan & Iraq.

My relatives who have served tours in the war and still there understand why we are there.

The largest number of military in the U.S. are based in San Diego. Those I speak with understand why we are there.

This Liberal POS for gay marriage, pro drugs,
strange three marriages, ACLU employee is all yours

Bob Barr while at USC in 1967 joined the Young Democrats of America, and rallied against the Vietnam War.

His parents disapproved, and threatened to cut off financial support if he continued his “flaming liberal” activities

On the Colbert Report on June 4, 2008, Barr confirmed that he now supports ending marijuana prohibition, as well as the War on Drugs

At the 2008 Libertarian National Convention, he apologized for the part of the Defense of Marriage Act which prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages ( Barr supports same sex marriage)

Barr has called for withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, leaving no permanent military bases. A press release from Barr’s presidential campaign stated: “The next president should commit to a speedy and complete withdrawal from Iraq, and tell the Iraqi people that the U.S. troops will be going home

Barr Does Not support the Patriot Act which has kept us from further attacks since 9/11

Barr has been a vocal opponent of President George W. Bush’s claim of authorization to wiretap transnational phone calls without individual judicial license. (Another favorite of the left.)

More recently, Barr has become a prominent member of the American Civil Liberties Union, sometimes doing paid consulting on privacy issues.

Barr had acquiesced to his then-wife having an abortion in 1983. He had also invoked a legal privilege during his 1985 divorce proceeding so he could refuse to answer questions on whether he’d cheated on his second wife with the woman who is now his third.”

I think we have a fundamentally different view of the role of government. I believe that government, both in the bedroom and with the tax collector, is the problem not the solution. Hence, I can never vote for hyper-statist, paternalist, welfarist like McCain and favor Barr. I suspect we cannot resolve this difference because you are apparently not as bothered by McCain’s big government views as I am. We have two different philosophies of government.

“Obama is not going to leave Iraq. I wish he would but he won’t.”

What conservative is against the Iraq war? And its not really about a war with Iraq. Its a war about freedom and terrorism.

Despite what the “media” would like us to believe, this wouldn’t be “historic.” Slick Willie already did this with Bill Cohen.

IIRC, Cohen replaced the previous DefSec, as Clinton had botched that one so badly, and needed a fall guy.

That said, this isn't historic, previous administrations have kept folks from the prior administrations in cabinet positions including a secretary of war.

Bush did it most recently with Mineta (though he was moved from commerce to transportation.)

I doubt Gates would want to work under an Obama administration, at the end of the day, they would just want you to be the republican fall guy that they can blame.
