US drilling continues to increase
Oil & Gas Journal ^ | June 28, 2008 | OGJ editors

Posted on 06/28/2008 6:16:19 PM PDT by thackney

US drilling activity continued climbing to 1,913 rotary rigs working this week, up by 7 from the previous week, vs. 1,775 units drilling in the same period a year ago, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.

That's the highest rig count since the week ended Jan. 3, 1986, when 1,915 rotary rigs were drilling in the US.

Land operations accounted for the latest gain, up 15 rigs to 1,827 working this week. Inland water drilling lost 1 rig to 22. Offshore drilling was down 7 rigs to 64 in the Gulf of Mexico, the only US offshore area in which there is drilling.

Of the rigs working this week, 375 were drilling for oil, 9 less than last week; 1,530 were drilling for natural gas, 16 more than the previous week; and 8 were unclassified. Directional drilling decreased by 2 rigs to 380. Horizontal drilling increased by 20 rigs to 564.

Among major producing states, Louisiana had the biggest increase, up 6 to 178. Five states were unchanged: Colorado at 113; New Mexico, 80; Wyoming, 76; California, 43; and Alaska, 6. Oklahoma dropped 7 rigs, with 200 still working. Texas was down 1 to 915.

Canada's rig count increased by 97 to 356 this week, up from 231 in the same period last year.

It doesn’t help to bring new rigs online. According to the Dumbocrats it takes 10 years to get oil from a new rig.

doesn’t matter how long it takes, we still need to drill. Independence from foreign aid is the only thing that matters now.

Iyt takes 10 years to get an apple from a tree but that doesn’t stop me from planting one.

We need refineries.

We could about triple the US domestic oil production before reaching the capacity of our existing refineries.

If we produce more domestic crude oil, we could import less from OPEC, which is where most of our imported oil comes from.

Also, we are expanding and upgrading many of the existing refineries. Some of those expansions are bigger than the average refinery.

The interesting statitics in this report are the number of rigs for oil and the number for natural gas. Oil is down while gas is up. But I will bet you will start hearing that we are drilling more and so the Republicans cannot claim foul.

Also notice the ratio between the oil and the gas rigs, 375 to 1530 or about one oil to every four gas. Although I am glad for the gas rigs since I get royalties from one of the companies pumping gas, I still would like to have more oil->gasoline.

It would take billions off the trade deficit every month.

And ten years ago we were planning on opening ANWAR but we stopped because it would have taken ten years to come online .. now its ten years later and we aren’t reaping the benifits.

Yes, we need refineries...

One thing totally amazes me is the underestimation - especially by the left - of our capabilities. If we made energy independence the #1 national priority it would not take years or decades we could have refineries and wells put up in no time.

The suggestion that it would take too long to matter is ludicrous on 3 counts. 1) if we tried we could do it faster 2) we have no idea how bad things may be in 3 years so why do nothing now and 3) doing something now will have a psychological effect on the market, and the current producers will pump out more.. and faster.. to exploit the current situation as much as possible before it fades away, further increasing supply and lowering price.

The naysayers seem to want to let high energy costs resolve themselves by destroying the worldwide economy. Lower demand is what they want. As usual, they try to dictate behavior and as always they will fail. It cannot be done.

The left full well recognizes our capabilities. And they are desperate that they not be deployed.

The environmental movement, the refusal to drill -- it's all about power. So long as the nation perceives itself as weak, they are strong.

Once we become energy independent, they will have lost a significant part of their power.

I heard from a driller that if they start drilling where they know there is oil, they will have oil in less than a year. This is the kind of info we need to be hearing.

Consider this....if we went electric, hydrogen or whatever, how long would it take to have electric re-charging stations, hydrogen refilling stations across the nation? Could the power companies handle it also?

Bring all American drilling rigs back from Russia and other countries and put them to work for us.

This is not a note of agreement or disagreement, but another perspective of a highly controversial subject.

FIRST… do you know what ANWR is?

ANWR = Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Now a Comparison

And some perspective…

NOTE WHERE THE PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT AREA IS…
(It's in the 'ANWR Coastal Plain')

THIS IS WHAT THE DEMOCRATS, LIBERALS AND 'GREENS' SHOW YOU WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT ANWR …and they are right… these ARE photographs of ANWR

ISN'T ANWR BEAUTIFUL?  WHY SHOULD WE DRILL HERE (AND DESTROY) THIS BEAUTIFUL PLACE?
WELL…THAT'S NOT EXACTLY THE TRUTH
Do you remember the map?
The map showed that the proposed drilling area is in the ANWR Coastal Plain.
Do those photographs look like a coastal plain to you?
WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?
The answer is simple...
THAT IS NOT WHERE THEY ARE WANTING TO DRILL!
THIS IS WHAT THE PROPOSED EXPLORATION AREA ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE IN THE WINTER

AND THIS IS WHAT IT ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE IN THE SUMMER

HERE ARE A COUPLE SCREEN SHOTS FROM GOOGLE EARTH

AS YOU CAN SEE, THE AREA WHERE THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT DRILLING IS A BARREN WASTELAND. OH… AND THEY SAY THAT THEY ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE EFFECT ON THE LOCAL WILDLIFE…HERE IS A PHOTO (SHOT DURING THE SUMMER) OF THE
'DEPLETED WILDLIFE' SITUATION CREATED BY DRILLING AROUND PRUDHOE BAY*…
DON'T YOU THINK THAT THE CARIBOU REALLY HATE THAT DRILLING?

HERE'S THAT SAME SPOT DURING THE WINTER.

HEY, THIS BEAR SEEMS TO REALLY HATE THE PIPELINE NEAR PRUDHOE BAY*…

*Prudhoe bay area accounts for 17% of U.S. domestic oil production
NOW, WHY DO YOU THINK THAT THE DEMOCRATS ARE LYING ABOUT ANWR?

REMEMBER WHEN AL GORE SAID THAT THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD WORK TO ARTIFICIALLY RAISE GAS PRICES TO $5.00 A GALLON?

WELL…

AL GORE AND HIS FELLOW DEMOCRATS HAVE ALMOST REACHED THEIR GOAL!

NOW THAT YOU KNOW THAT THE DEMOCRATS HAVE BEEN LYING, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

YOU CAN START BY FORWARDING THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW… SO THAT THEY WILL KNOW THE TRUTH.

LET'S START BY DUMPING THOSE LIBERAL POLITICIANS, WHETHER THEY BE DEMOCRATS OR REPUBLICANS...!

My parents live here in Texas. They have had thier land leased to oil companies for 30 years or more. They have always hoped for an oil well on thier land but it never materialized. The Oil Companies called them TODAY and told them they would be ready to drill on thier land by the end of July! Hallelujah!
