Now maybe everyone should sing how they feel instead of the National Anthem This is the USA in 2008? personal feelings should ALWAYS trump the National Anthem. That is what will unite us. Lift Every Voice and Sing was written around 1900 as a Christian hymn, and I doubt if the writer intended it to be a "black national anthem."

When our congregation sang it during a church service a few years ago, I had heretofore never heard of it, but noting the copyright date of 1920 in our hymnal, I figured at the time that the words were inspired by World War I.
