A singer who was to perform the "Star Spangled Banner" at the presentation of Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper's State of the City address yesterday substituted the "Black National Anthem" without notifying anyone, because she says as a black, she just doesn't feel American.
"I pulled a switcheroonie on them," Rene Marie said in a report in the Denver Post.
In a video of the event, Marie had been introduced by city council president Michael Hancock, who said she would sing the national anthem. Instead, she sang "Lift Every Voice and Sing," also known as the "Black National Anthem," to the tune of the "Star-Spangled Banner."
Audience members were bewildered, council members outraged and the mayor expressed his disappointment.
"We were as surprised as anyone that jazz singer Rene Marie did not sing our national anthem at today's State of the City ceremony, as our staff had requested. As I listened to her sing, I assumed she would eventually move into the traditional Star Spangled Banner," Hickenlooper said in a statement.
Council member Charlie Brown said, "There is no substitute for the national anthem. Period. This is the State of the City address. It's not an NAACP convention."

This is a free country and she is free to leave if she doesn’t like it here.
She did sound awful. I didn’t think she kept the tune of the Star Bangled Banner. I don’t know what it sounded like. Crap is one word that comes to mind though.
They never do. They just like to destroy this one.

If you don’t feel American,sweetie then you’ll surely have no problem swapping passports with a citizen of Senegal,Mali,Zimbabwe or some other African nation.That way both you and the African will feel you got a good deal and,I’ll wager,the newly minted US citizen will show his/her appreciation by being a far better citizen than you ever dreamed of being.

She should be asked to sing at the democRAT national convention then. It will make great GOP campaign ads.

If you don’t feel like an American, find out where you do feel at home and live there.
Of course you may find that things there aren’t any better depending on where you choose to go.
I have never seen or heard of this person before today ... but I now have an overwhelming urge to punch her in the face.

Your experience is a common one but I also know quite a few white kids-and Mexican and Asians-who went to mostly black schools and actually acculturated into the black ambiance of those places.Not really”wiggers”but just white kids who hung out with the blacks and adopted many of their cultural patterns,especially with music and speech.
Then there were the white kids that withdrew and stayed to themselves and just plain were not very comfortable in that environment.

Hickenlooper’s staff picked Marie to sing the national anthem. The mayor says he believes Marie did not intend to offend anyone or make a political statement.

Two white kids I would spend summers with at Lake Tahoe who went to a now notorious Oakland ghetto school in the Sixties when it was integrated.
Pete and Jerry would tell”coon jokes”,mock black speech patterns and had a pretty racist perspective as we would define it today.
Yet they were powerfully in love with black music and in later years Pete had a very devoted black girlfriend.
On top of that,Jerry beat one white kid’s butt who came up from Woodside talking about”those Oakland niggers”.Jerry jumped on him sreaming,”Don’t you EVER talk about my friends like that again”.
It was almost like he was saying,”I EARNED the right to be a racist.You rich suburban snots did not”

They’ll be calling on her do do her little song at the Democrat convention to kick off BHO’s nomination night.

I suggest that this lady head on over to Zimbabwe and see just how long it take her to "feel American". I will bet that she would be looking for the fastest transportation home that she could find.
People who think that America is so, so awful need to get out of the country and experience the sub par alternatives out there. It might just give them a different perspective on the USA.
As for this anthem incident, it was a complete insult to the mayor, city officials, and others in attendance. She should have been pulled up short and fast by the mayor. Even though he was taken by surprise, he should get angry and get even. If I were he I would take out a full page ad in the newspaper reprimanding Ms.Marie on her insolence and lack of professionalism. From what I read she is taking a rather smug and superior attitude about the whole thing. Sort of like,"I showed them AND I got away with it." She should not be able to pull this little "switcheroonie" and suffer no repercussions.
