Mary Easley's 88 percent pay raise questioned

Wife of N.C. Governor Mike Easley.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- There is more controversy surrounding First Lady Mary Easley in the wake of expensive taxpayer funded trips abroad by both the first lady and Governor Mike Easley.

Eyewitness News has learned that Mary Easley got an 88 percent raise at her job at N.C. State University.

Until this week, Mary Easley got paid $90,000 a year to recruit speakers to come to campus. Now her job duties have expanded to include directing a public safety program and co-directing a pre-law program. Her salary has expanded to $170,000 a year.

"I realize she's gonna spend more time at it and there could have been some raise. But essentially almost doubling her salary is just totally inappropriate." State Representative Skip Stam (R-Wake) is the minority leader of the state House.

He's a republican who doesn't hesitate to criticize Governor Mike Easley - a democrat - but in the halls of the Legislature, even some democrats are rolling their eyes over the raise given to the governor's wife.

Both the governor and first lady have recently been criticized for lavish spending on expensive trips abroad, paid for with taxpayer money. They counter that those trips could eventually bring big money to North Carolina.

Still, in the midst of the fallout from the trips and negotiations with the Legislature over a state budge, the timing of Mary Easley's raise rankles many like Stam. "State employees who are getting three percent raises will be very, they will not understand this at all," Wake County Representative Stam said.

But Mary Easley's supervisor, N.C. State's provost, defends her new salary for the increased workload.

Mike hits a bad political trifecta. He is dumb as a post, he is corrupt, and he is ineffective. Somehow that combination appeals to folks in my state. Were he in the running I bet we’d fall all overourselves to put this dope back into office.

Sleazily is more than your garden variety disgrace. Even the liberal N and O has been all over him lately. Take the story about his wife’s travel. Taxpayers like me payed $36000 for her and four others to fly first class to Moscow where we bought them $1100 each ballet tickets. We also spent $27000 (!!!!!) on making sure she had a 24hr chauffeured Mercedes while she was in Paris. The guy is a flat out crook.

“Mary Easley’s supervisor, N.C. State’s provost, defends her new salary for the increased workload.”

Was she getting 90K for a 20-hour week? It must be incredibly difficult work to recruit left-wing speakers.

How can she ever find time to take a trip now?

“When will we have had enough?”

There is an entire industry in this country that is based on the defrauding of the American people — it is called government.

...During 2005, the South Side Democrat’s income as a public official almost tripled to $154,047, after he left the Illinois state Senate for the nation’s capital.

His wife’s income as an administrator at the not-for-profit University of Chicago Hospitals nearly tripled to $316,962, from $121,910.

In 2005, she was also elected to the board of directors of west suburban Westchester-based TreeHouse Foods, which calls itself the nation’s largest pickle and pepper supplier. For that, she received $12,000 and $33,000 from a subsidiary.

She was promoted to the hospitals’ vice president for community and external affairs in March. Obama said that his wife, who, like him, is a Harvard law school graduate, was deserving of the promotion and raise.

Her previous position was less demanding, he said, and because his Senate campaign had ended and she had more time to devote to her work, she was more marketable with her educational background and other strengths.

‘’You can’t fault her for being smarter and better qualified for all sorts of jobs than I am,’’ he said.
