Since deserting his unit in Iraq and fleeing to Canada two years ago, Corey Glass has become the poster boy of the war resisters movement. Thursday in Toronto, supporters are planning to protest his scheduled deportation back to the United States. Corey Glass, 25, who deserted the U.S. Army while his unit was in Iraq and fled to Canada has become a cause celebre there. The American's impending deportation has led to protests and a parliamentary resolution. (ABC News Photo Illustration)But it turns out Glass has had little reason to be on the lam, ABC News has learned. Unknown to him and his legion of supporters, Glass, 25, was actually discharged from the U.S. Army shortly after he went AWOL in 2006. Glass and about 40 other American deserters who, like him, sought refugee status have prompted a national debate in Canada that last month reached the floor of parliament on where to draw the line between cowardice and conscience. "I had absolutely no idea that I had been discharged," said Glass when ABC News informed him of his status. "This is insane. This is so weird. There are no warrants? No one is looking for me?" Related According to U.S. Army documents and officials, Glass was discharged from the California National Guard Dec. 1, 2006, four months after he arrived in Canada. "He is not considered absent without leave. He is not considered a deserter," said Maj. Nathan Banks, an Army spokesman. "He is running for no reason. He is fully welcome in the United States. I cannot believe this is a big deal in Canada." But it is a big deal in Canada, where lawmakers last month overwhelmingly passed a nonbinding resolution, 137 to 110, to freeze the deportation of American deserters, starting with Glass.

It sounds to me like the Army doesn’t even care. So what is he hiding from now?
I am laughing so hard now. He actually seems hurt that no one cares that he is a coward. Too funny!
He stays in Canada because that is how he makes his money from the moonbats.
“I won’t have cowards in my Army”...Patton
What chaps me is that this SOB will be eligible for military benefits. BTT.
The smug, hard-core socialists and anti-Bush types in Canada love the story, regardless of its truth or not.
His dignity? Can we refuse him re-entry to the USA?
What a weeny.
“Nobodys looking for me?”
“I’m a nobody?”
1The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion. Proverbs 28:1
I nominate him for the Seriously Stuned Dumbglass award.
I just wanted to point out that the “resolution” to “freeze” deportations (which, by the way, was brought forth by the opposition)
was Non-Binding, and is being ignored by our government—we are deporting them all.
*”This is an all volunteer military, where one comes on his own and signs on the dotted line.”
*Agreed 100%
I like the idea of revoking citizenship for these morons. Why can’t we have our own resolution here in this country? Not only do they lose citizenship, they also are not allowed back into the country.
As much as the hate the good old USA, they always want to come back don’t they!! There is no place like home. Even for a coward, deserter. In days gone by the coward would have faced a firing squad. Everyone in his squad who stood tall for the USA should send him a personal letter when he gets back to mommies house thanking the coward for having there back over in the desert. What a piece of CRAP!! The lefties will probably want to give him and all his other coward friends up in our big retarded friend to the north full discharge benefits due a honorably discharged war veteran.
ping
If the Canadians love the deserters so much, let the Canucks feed and house them.
We are DEPORTING them.
We are DEPORTING them.
Could you deport them to Cuba or Venezuela? We really don't want them back.
Yes! We shouldn’t have to take them back. Revoke citizenship and ban them from the country. Let them be deported somewhere else.
> Pieces of crap like Corey Glass and the bums like him need to have their citizenship taken from them and shipped to desert island somewhere.
Surely not! Corey Glass is a National Treasure, he deserves to serve his country again, and ought to be treated as the special being that he is.
Sorta like you would treat — I dunno — the Sasquatch or a Space Alien from Area 51 if you were ever lucky enough to catch one alive.
Put him in a humane cage on permanent display somewhere in the Smithsonian. Give him his I-Pod and a TV and a fridge full of cold beer and free hot pizza for the rest of his unnatural life: everything he could possibly want, except his Liberty.
He could serve as an example to mothers everywhere on how not to bring up their sons. With any luck, he could last 50 years or more.
“Could you deport them to Cuba or Venezuela? “
Ha ha ha...we’ll certainly try !
They said he was discharged, a dishonorable discharge I hope.
Would he still be eligible for military benefits with a dishonorable discharge?
Glass was given a "general under honorable conditions" discharge,
Full bennies (or nearly so). That plucking feeling you're getting is your wallet being picked. Now that I've ruined your evening too... ;-)
Try a HANO insertion.
Has that John Kerry look about him.
I’m basically in sync with you. This is an all volunteer army. If someone decides they don’t want to fight anymore, then they should possibly face civil penalties for breach of contract, but not criminal.
If Canada doesn’t want them and we don’t want them maybe they could visas from Iraq?
27 votes is "overwhelming"? Only in Canada!
If we say they will face the death penalty, Canada will keep them. Just saying...
That's right Mr. Glass. Nobody wants you.
"He is running for no reason. He is fully welcome in the United States." - Maj. Nathan Banks
Not so fast there Major!
I heard from unnamed, unidentified, unknown sources that these cowardly losers will face the death penalty if they return to the U.S. But mostly especially Mr. Glass. Therefore; you have to keep their yellow bellied habeas corpses and stuff.
Sright?
What does "Alex" and his Mom have to say about this?
Tell ‘em to deport a 6-pack of Moosehead instead. It doesn’t even have to be cold.
Amen and pass the ketchup. lol
To Whom It May Concern,
If Canadians want to keep Corey Glass and all the other deserters from the United States military, so be it. We, the true patriots here in states say keep the cowards. In time of war, if there was a draft and draft evaders ran for Canada, that's one thing. But when people go AWOL and desert when they voluntarily signed on the dotted line to serve, that makes them cowards not draft evaders. These pieces of dirt knew exactly what they were doing when they signed their enlistment papers. All they wanted from the military and the government was a free ride, free education and everything that comes from serving your country. They didn't want to work for it.
As far as the Canadians are concerned, I am of Canadian ancestry. My parents are both Canadian by birth. I was born in Canada. I have dual citizenship thanks to the U.S. Army and the United States government. I am embarrassed and disgusted by what the people of Canada say about deserters and cowards like Glass. The people of Canada forget that they are under the umbrella of protection provided by the United States for all countries of the North American continent.
Wake up and smell the liberal bullshit you are standing in provided to you from your socialist country
They should be deported to Greenland.
I agree, let Canada have him. Why should he be an American citizen anymore? He gave up that right.
Bump for later.
Bring them home. Give them a parade.Give them a welcome home banquet. Do a segment on CNN, then shoot them in the head.
See he made the claim for attention. He was just trying to get chicks.
A bit hard to stick to his story now that the U.S. says they could care less and he can come and go as he pleases.
What a hoot. Now we should just revoke his U.S. citizenship and condemn him to the Canadian health care system!
ABC is not a Canadian wire service. It has a weak grasp of the parliamentary system. It also has a tendency to list to port.
Not that the resolution was non-binding, I doubt very much that it would have passed had it been binding. That is because the government opposed it and would have had to make it a confidence vote. That would have brought down the government. No way would the opposition parties want to have an election on this issue.
This is just a bit of fun and games by the opposition. They can take a poke at the Tories without risking any consequences.
Note that the Crown had been actively opposing the deserter's applications even when the government was a majority Liberal one so the Grits don't wnd them either.
That sure doesn't sound like the Army I served in.
LOL! You're being way too kind to ABC!
“...disgusted by what the people of Canada say ...”
*Anti-war hippies do not speak for all Canadians—just as they do not speak for all Americans
*We have soldiers fighting in Afghanistan... we are sending you back your cowards.
“We are DEPORTING them.”
Ha ha ha ha.... you don’t want ‘em either, eh? Can’t blame you. Maybe Europe will take them...
I hope the discharge was dishonorable.
Oh saw that it is not. Why should those cowards be entitled to any benefits? It makes me sick.
Ha ha, maybe Afghanistan or Iraq will take them!
If as reported he is running from nothing then I expect him to pay back every last cent that the Canadian tax payer has spent on deporting this slimy piece of work.
