Since deserting his unit in Iraq and fleeing to Canada two years ago, Corey Glass has become the poster boy of the war resisters movement. Thursday in Toronto, supporters are planning to protest his scheduled deportation back to the United States. Corey Glass, 25, who deserted the U.S. Army while his unit was in Iraq and fled to Canada has become a cause celebre there. The American's impending deportation has led to protests and a parliamentary resolution. (ABC News Photo Illustration)But it turns out Glass has had little reason to be on the lam, ABC News has learned. Unknown to him and his legion of supporters, Glass, 25, was actually discharged from the U.S. Army shortly after he went AWOL in 2006. Glass and about 40 other American deserters who, like him, sought refugee status have prompted a national debate in Canada that last month reached the floor of parliament on where to draw the line between cowardice and conscience. "I had absolutely no idea that I had been discharged," said Glass when ABC News informed him of his status. "This is insane. This is so weird. There are no warrants? No one is looking for me?" Related According to U.S. Army documents and officials, Glass was discharged from the California National Guard Dec. 1, 2006, four months after he arrived in Canada. "He is not considered absent without leave. He is not considered a deserter," said Maj. Nathan Banks, an Army spokesman. "He is running for no reason. He is fully welcome in the United States. I cannot believe this is a big deal in Canada." But it is a big deal in Canada, where lawmakers last month overwhelmingly passed a nonbinding resolution, 137 to 110, to freeze the deportation of American deserters, starting with Glass.

“Could you deport them to Cuba or Venezuela? “
Ha ha ha...we’ll certainly try !
They said he was discharged, a dishonorable discharge I hope.
Would he still be eligible for military benefits with a dishonorable discharge?
Glass was given a "general under honorable conditions" discharge,
Full bennies (or nearly so). That plucking feeling you're getting is your wallet being picked. Now that I've ruined your evening too... ;-)
Try a HANO insertion.
Has that John Kerry look about him.
I’m basically in sync with you. This is an all volunteer army. If someone decides they don’t want to fight anymore, then they should possibly face civil penalties for breach of contract, but not criminal.
If Canada doesn’t want them and we don’t want them maybe they could visas from Iraq?
27 votes is "overwhelming"? Only in Canada!
If we say they will face the death penalty, Canada will keep them. Just saying...
That's right Mr. Glass. Nobody wants you.
"He is running for no reason. He is fully welcome in the United States." - Maj. Nathan Banks
Not so fast there Major!
I heard from unnamed, unidentified, unknown sources that these cowardly losers will face the death penalty if they return to the U.S. But mostly especially Mr. Glass. Therefore; you have to keep their yellow bellied habeas corpses and stuff.
Sright?
What does "Alex" and his Mom have to say about this?
Tell ‘em to deport a 6-pack of Moosehead instead. It doesn’t even have to be cold.
Amen and pass the ketchup. lol
To Whom It May Concern,
If Canadians want to keep Corey Glass and all the other deserters from the United States military, so be it. We, the true patriots here in states say keep the cowards. In time of war, if there was a draft and draft evaders ran for Canada, that's one thing. But when people go AWOL and desert when they voluntarily signed on the dotted line to serve, that makes them cowards not draft evaders. These pieces of dirt knew exactly what they were doing when they signed their enlistment papers. All they wanted from the military and the government was a free ride, free education and everything that comes from serving your country. They didn't want to work for it.
As far as the Canadians are concerned, I am of Canadian ancestry. My parents are both Canadian by birth. I was born in Canada. I have dual citizenship thanks to the U.S. Army and the United States government. I am embarrassed and disgusted by what the people of Canada say about deserters and cowards like Glass. The people of Canada forget that they are under the umbrella of protection provided by the United States for all countries of the North American continent.
Wake up and smell the liberal bullshit you are standing in provided to you from your socialist country
They should be deported to Greenland.
Bump for later.
Bring them home. Give them a parade.Give them a welcome home banquet. Do a segment on CNN, then shoot them in the head.
See he made the claim for attention. He was just trying to get chicks.
A bit hard to stick to his story now that the U.S. says they could care less and he can come and go as he pleases.
What a hoot. Now we should just revoke his U.S. citizenship and condemn him to the Canadian health care system!
