Here is the thing - and this is true today for as for in the great days of the “conservative revolution” in our past.
Conservative principles benefit ALL PEOPLE - no matter the race, the gender, the religion.
Smaller government - which means fewer government employees which meanms- lower taxes which means increased ability for ALL PEOPLE to keep more of their own money rather than letting the government bureaucracy WASTE IT by the bilions BENEFITS ALL. Even the government “union” people who think they benefit by supporting liberals into office.
Why? Because lowering taxes and reducing government regulations and strangulations of private businesses across the board leads to economic prosperity for ALL!
More entrepreneurs start businesses, more small business owners prosper, more jobs are provided with benefits by those small businesses, which mean more TAXES coming in, and more longterm benefits for those who are in government employment!
Not to mention the fact that a strong military, national defense, is necessary in the first place to bring economic wellbeing and freedom as we live in peace thanks to our military and God’s blessings and defense of this nation.
Throw in support for measures that PROMOTE Godliness and justice rather than endorsing LAWLESSNESS, Licentiousness, Godlessness (through anti-Christian, anti-Jewish, anti-God rulings in the courts and laws in the legislatures)....and you have what a conservative stands for. Godlessness in our communities benefit EVERYONE .... making everyone’s lives safer from crime that comes from tolerating and promoting lawless, Godless behavior.
Conservatism benefits ALL CITIZENS of this country!
It benefits all freedom loving people in the world, as well.
We need more lions like Jesse Helms to stand up and make this clear.
Back in the day, I lived in Raleigh, I remember Jesse from his one minute a newcast edtorials. The WRAL management thought they were “giving him rope” and letting him make a fool of himself.
I met the man a few times, he was a little hard-core for my taste, BUT.. his ‘72 campaign set the tone for the “southern strategy”. The movie “Easy Rider” was fresh in everyone’s mind. A billboard I saw outside Cary and replicated statewide: Long-haired, greasy, leering hippie riding a high-handlebarred, extended-fork Harley (strange caricaturish resemblance to Peter Fonda), funny cigarette hanging out his mouth and a single digit salute directed at the viewer.
Text: “You’re not leaving the Democrat Party, It’s left you!” Like him, love him, hate him, one of the most effective political ads I ever saw. His entire career Jesse fought hard negatives of 40% or better; and won in a yellow-dog Dem state. Had he not turned out NC for Reagan... maybe Reagan wins anyway, but really tight.
Amen. May God bless his soul. He was an extraordinary American, and a person to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude.
I was able to meet Jesse in person and he truly was a fine gentleman, Patriot, and Statesman. I am convinced that unless Jesse had campaigned for Reagan and turned the tide in the North Carolina primary in 1976, Reagan would never have been nominated in 1980, much less elected. Jesse Helms is my hero.

Yep Sir...Tom Ellis and Carter Wrenn were two smart cookies that ran the campaign side of Helms’ organization back in those days. That ‘84 campaign was the most expensive and dirtiest senate race ever and still is if adjusted for inflation even over big states like California.
When a two-term incumbent governor faces off against a two-term incumbent senator the gov has the big advantage due to all the patronage he controls. Thank God Helms held up under that gruelling schedule and Reagan lead the ticket so strongly. Helms did a super job in those ‘84 debates against the younger sharpie (by reputation) Gov. Hunt.
I remember all three debates between Jesse and Hunt. Jesse was a bit tentative in the first, but nailed Hunt in the second and destroyed Hunt in the third. Hunt lost it when Jesse asked him what war he served in. Hunt replied “Are you questioning my patriotism?” It was amusing to see the alleged hip and new democrat self destruct.
