New Push To Prevent Gas Gouging At Illinois Pumps (Americans aren't jazzed about the math)

New Push To Prevent Gas Gouging At Illinois Pumps
Reporting Dorothy Tucker
Jul 3, 2008 6:27 pm US/Central

CHICAGO (CBS) With the price of gas well over $4 a gallon, consumers want every drop they pay for.

But sometimes Pamela Smith wondered if the gas was flowing when she was pumping.

"While I'm pumping the nozzle is clicking and it's going on and off and I'm not certain if the gas is going into the vehicle," Smith said.

She is among the hundreds who have registered their concerns with the state. The state has had 700 complaints since January, compared to 500 in all of 2006.

"So it's clear that consumers are feeling the pain at the pump and they're feeling in some places local gas station is not giving every penny that they're paying for," Gov. Rod Blagojevich said.

To try and protect the public, the governor is increasing the number of inspectors who monitor gas stations from 13 to 18. Those inspectors make sure the quantity is accurate and if you choose premium you actually get premium.

And to make sure you don't get ripped off, "when you take the nozzle off, if you see anything rolling on there, money wise or gallon wise, hang it up," state inspector Bob Pankala said.

And when you stop pumping, check and make sure the numbers have also stopped running.

I get it. Liberals decide when you've really filled up!

You do have to be careful, because there are definitely dishonest creeps out there who are a lot like the old butcher who would put his thumb on the scale. However, generally it’s simply because - well, the price of gas is too high, and will be until we start drilling.

Lots of “reporting” going on to keep the sheeple distracted, but precious little about what is actually going on (i.e. supplies constrained by Democrat policies, excessive taxation).

That’s why they used to say (and probably still do) to buy gas five gallons at a time. The inspectors usually fill five gallon containers.

Yep!

The gov wouldn't think about rolling back the gas tax.

My best friend went to the reservation to buy gas last summer. Drove in with a pickup having a 22 gallon tank and bought 23-1/2 gallons of gas. Is there such thing as an indian gallon?

One thing I do when in doubt:

When pumping your gas, pause your fillup at 10.0 gallons even. The price shown should equal 10 times the posted per gallon price. Example: Gas is $4.29. Therefore 10 gallons X $4.29 = $42.90. This price should match the price you should see on the pump. If there is any difference, then the pump is off.

If you pay with nickles - yes.

If I was worried I wasn’t getting enough gas, I’d fill up my 5 gallon gas can to make sure.

That seems logical.

Let's just say you're a sucker mom with two screaming 'ME generation' brats in the back seat. The blue tooth earpiece is ringing off the hook because both your so-called husband and present lover are attempting phone tag. Your credit card accounts are topped off so you really aren't sure this transaction will go through.

Do you really stop and calculate?

So - you would NAIL 5 gallons every time? What if you actually pumped 4.85 gallons? You still wouldn't know. Kinda looks like 5 - but isn't. I blame Pelosi.

I’ve had the same car for years. I always fill up at a quarter of a tank and I’ve seen no change in the amount it takes to fill up. I purchase gas at several different stations.

I have a mark on the gas tank where 5 gallons is. You can fill up the tank with water using a cleaned out milk gallon jug. Then make the mark. You’re set.
