SANTA ANA A 22-year-old man is in custody after police said he and another man unwittingly tried to carjack an unmarked police car with two uniformed officers inside.

At 9:30 p.m. Thursday, the officers were investigating illegal fireworks activity in the 2200 block of Eastwood Avenue when a sports utility vehicle pulled up in front of their unmarked police sedan, said Santa Ana Police Department Comm. Steve Colon.

The two men got out of the SUV and took "an aggressive approach toward the officers," Colon said. The driver acted as if he had a weapon in his waistband, police said.

At that point, the officers got out of the car; the two suspects ran back into their SUV and attempted to get away, Colon said. Police suspect the two men didn't realize there were officers in the vehicle.

The officers chased the SUV a short distance before the suspects jumped out of the car and ran, Colon said. The unidentified driver managed to get away.

Eleazar Lopez, of Santa Ana, was caught and arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy, Colon said. Nobody was hurt during the incident.

I ran out of gas very early one morning years ago about 5 miles short of Grants, New Mexico....an old Indian couple picked me up and took me to town.

Hitch hiking back, a car with two guys stopped for me; I noticed that both were unshaven and pretty scrungy looking, and we were already up to speed when I noticed weapons all around the car.

Turns out they were state cops on the way to work; they stopped again - all bright and shiny and cleaned up in their patrol car about an hour later to assist me getting the VW primed (I'd run out of fuel and was parked on a hill making it difficult to get the gas pumping right).

This reminds me of a NYC incident that occurred in the 1970s.

A robber decided to hold up a branch of Citibank on Third Avenue & 68th Street.

A number of customers in the bank were there to deposit their payroll checks ... they were agents assigned to the FBI’s NYC headquarters which was located on the other side of Third Avenue.

I think the robber is still in prison.

--carjacking could be completely eliminated by simply putting out a few decoys, in the form of expensive vehicles with a policewoman disguised as a suburban "mom", with the back seat containing two officers with shotguns at the ready, using them on any would-be carjacker as he approached the vehicle---

--obviously this wouldn't pass the "political correctness" test , however--

Why spring for the manpower costs? Set it like a mousetrap and have springloaded seats that impale carjackers. Clean the seats and reset the trap.

Maybe they weren’t really going to hijack the car but knew they were undercover and led a chase so that everyone else could enjoy buying fireworks. ;’)

Not much to do with the topic, I know, but this reminds me of Walter Williams' wonderful take on mandatory drivers' side airbags, and how the protection they offer makes drivers a little less careful than they might be. WW suggested a new idea to make drivers more careful and polite on the roadways: Drivers' side spears!

Man, I LOVE Walter Williams!

Would have been a much, much better story if it were two legally-ARMED CITIZENS in the intended victim car and they took the two A**Hole carjackers down.

How quickly do you think it would have been reported??
Now, one of them got away and can try again on an unsuspecting (and probably unarmed) victim. And it’s a matter of time until the other A**hole gets out of jail.

Thanks for posting though.

In South Africa, you can get a flame thrower installed
that ignites into a wall of flame on either side of the car
when threatened by carjackers. You just push the button and
it’s crispy critter time. Legal too!

I have a problem with this. Two guys had “an aggressive approach” and “acted as if” they had a weapon? The two cops got out and they ran. Where does it say they actually tried to car jack the vehicle?
