Ground Zero rebuild plan scrapped
BBC ^ | 1 July 2008

The owner of the World Trade Center has abandoned the timetable for rebuilding work at the site of the 9/11 attacks, saying it was "not realistic".

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey executive director, Christopher Ward, listed over a dozen issues that had slowed work and raised costs.

New dates for the completion of a memorial, skyscrapers and a transit hub are expected to be issued in September.

It is unclear if the centrepiece Freedom Tower will now be scaled back.

The tower, intended as a replacement for the destroyed Twin Towers, had been scheduled for completion in 2006 and then 2011, but the latest estimate is 2013.

At 1,776ft (541m) it would be one of the tallest buildings in the world.

'Emotional dates'

In a report to New York governor David Paterson, Mr Ward said: "The schedule and cost estimates of the rebuilding effort that have been communicated to the public are not realistic."

He said developers and government agencies would set new "clear and achievable timelines" by the end of September.

Mr Ward said the earliest rebuilding estimates in the wake of the 9/11 attacks were not truthful, referring to them as "emotional dates".

The deadlines for the redevelopment work have been moved several times.

The project's initial $14bn (£7bn) budget has continued to rise as commodity prices soar and developers and government agencies wrangle over site plans.

I don't think it's the 'timetable' or budget that is the problem here. The so-called Freedom Tower design is wildly unpopular and may even be unbuildable.

Why don't we just buy one from Saudi Arabia? Heck its not like they aren't getting all of our gas money anyway.

They should rebuild it the way it was, but with the addition of anti-aircraft guns. Anything less, and the Islamo-fascists won.

I still like this design the best.

They should just rebuild it as it was. This whole thing is getting comical. Every day delay is another victory to the terrorists.

I like that design you posted. Make that central tower higher than anything in Dubai or anywhere.

What I heard is that the group pushing to build the towers the way they were only taller is gaining ground. Their plan could be done a lot faster than the still skeleton tower.

Anything less than a complete rebuild of The Twin Towers, each 50% higher than the originals, and done and finished on 9-11-2011 is a win for the Terrorists! We can do it! As they say here in Texas, “ Get at IT, or Get Outa the Way!

I like that 5-tower concept. It looks like a giant hand giving a monumental ‘bird’ to all terrorists, anti-Americans, and bleeding-heart liberal appeasers.

Maybe we can get it funded by WV’s senator?

All we’d have to do is promise to call it Byrd Tower...

I think the problem is that we’ve gone from a can do nation to a do nothing nation.

This is New York where no important decisions are made anymore...unless it’s passing a law about what you cannot eat.

Just rebuild it as it was, only a lot stronger and perhaps a bit taller and get back to business as before. There was nothing wrong with the look and style of the original.

I think the original design was to bland and the new proposal was way to gaudy and over wrought.

The original design was optimized for speed of construction and cost cutting. It produced a lot of floor space and was light weight and cheap and fast to build. Never again will a tall building be constructed using that method. Once the collapse started it ran away as opposed to a traditional design such as the Sears Tower.

IMO there is no need to try and make the new buildings much taller than what they were either.

The way the economy is going they won’t be able to build it if they wait much longer.

All we’d have to do is promise to call it Byrd Tower... And promise to build it in West Virginia. ;)
