You said it. I contemplated on buying a RoadTrek and living out of it when I get older.
I did exactly that in 1970 for three months when Gas was 27 cents a gallon and a motel was six bucks.Campgrounds were virtually free.
Size does matter. I have owned tents to a 38 Ft Class A. I presently have a washer/dryer, icemaker, satellite-driven flat panel TVs, and go anywhere. Class B are fine for traveling, but lengthy stays are better with space. Add to the mix, that you can buy a big one for the price of a RoadTrek. I only spend 10-15 days a year actually driving it. I arrive at my destination, hit the levelers, and turn on the TV. I love the recliners...
I spend 6 months on the road. RV parks are clean, wholesome, and cheap. You meet some of the nicest people in the world, and spend time learning from others. For $3-500 per month, you get everything you need to live comfortably (Power, cable, water, sewer, swimming pools, etc), except food and a roof. I drag an older Windstar to wander about. Spot looks cool with the T-tops out, but the van keeps him from jumping and running!
My dog, Spot and "Baby"..
My wife and I (and the dogs) took a few years off and traveled the country. We still have the travel trailer and hope to get on the road again when our son is more recovered from his vehicle accident. Even with the higher cost of gas, it is still a good life on the road. You travel less distance and spend more time in camps. Gas would have to rise several times the current price to drive all the RV-ers out. (Of course the prices now will hit the very low income people and that is a shame. If our country would drill and refine we would see prices drop or at least rise less rapidly.)
As for the environmentalists telling us what we can and can’t do, I intend to take the same attitude that I do about firearms. They will have to pry my gun out of one hand and my other hand from the wheel. We have already given up so much freedom, the line must be drawn somewhere.
