A special meeting about Dallas County traffic tickets turned tense and bizarre this afternoon.
County commissioners were discussing problems with the central collections office that is used to process traffic ticket payments and handle other paperwork normally done by the JP Courts.
Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said it seemed that central collections "has become a black hole" because paperwork reportedly has become lost in the office.
Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, interrupted him with a loud "Excuse me!" He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a "white hole."
That prompted Judge Thomas Jones, who is black, to demand an apology from Mayfield for his racially insensitive analogy.
Mayfield shot back that it was a figure of speech and a science term. A black hole, according to Webster's, is perhaps "the invisible remains of a collapsed star, with an intense gravitational field from which neither light nor matter can escape."

Reminds me of a similar meeting long time ago. It was on all the major newspapers. A guy used the term ‘niggardly’ (begrudgingly) during a meeting, and he was excoriated by black attendees. I think he may even have been fired.

Evidently, John Wiley Price is sufficiently ignorant that he doesn’t know what a black hole is. Since that appears to be the case, I say we just let him exist in his own little stupid world.

John Wiley Price has in the recent past been a fiscally responsible, reputable leader of the Dallas County Commissioners.
Let’s hope he’s not falling back into his 1980’s lunacy.

That would be funny - except that the effect of this ignorant sensitivity is to reduce vocabulary. Where a word like “niggardly”, which has a perfectly distinct etymology and predates the racial epithet by over 100 years, has an appropriate use, these chowder heads will banish it from usage forever. The kind of thing that would make me drop my opposition to Obama would be his coming out and attacking this kind of reflexive but adamant ignorance on the part of blacks. He of all people should understand the value of an education and the power of a developed vocabulary. Yet he cannot take the time to point out that Rev. Wright was not merely being bombastic - but he was completely false in many assertions (such as HIV as a deliberated policy of government as urban genocide). I won’t hold my breath for Obama to come around.
