Internet flaw could let hackers take over the Web

Computer industry heavyweights are hustling to fix a flaw in the foundation of the Internet that would let hackers control traffic on the World Wide Web.

Major software and hardware makers worked in secret for months to create a software "patch" released on Tuesday to repair the problem, which is in the way computers are routed to web page addresses.

"It's a very fundamental issue with how the entire addressing scheme of the Internet works," ...

"You'd have the Internet, but it wouldn't be the Internet you expect. (Hackers) would control everything."

The flaw would be a boon for "phishing" cons that involve leading people to imitation web pages of businesses such as bank or credit card companies to trick them into disclosing account numbers, passwords and other information.

"An attacker with the ability to conduct a successful cache poisoning attack can cause a nameserver's clients to contact the incorrect, and possibly malicious, hosts for particular services," CERT said.

"Consequently, web traffic, email, and other important network data can be redirected to systems under the attacker's control."

.

There are already existing federal laws that have sentences up to and including the death sentence for hacking

So much on the internet is now used by EMS, rural Docs doing life-saving surgery using remote web-surgeons, LEOs, FDs, US and even other “friendly” military - such as emergency surgery in choppers or UAVs

Hacking is not just a path to blackmailing big corporations into hiring these creeps anymore

Don’t these simpletons comprehend that some big interests will “disappear” them before anyone will notice?

Burn a few of them and they will find other hobbies!

This article is badly overhyped.

Yes, there was a recent security patch to multiple implementations of DNS. Yes, the old one was vulnerable to hacking as was known for years. But (1) the danger was not nearly as grave as the article implies and (2) unless you are a system administrator, you don’t need to worry.

Keep us posted. My ‘puter glitched up badly enough to require a restart yesterday.

That nearly never happens (it’s a Mac). Happened on the Obama birth certificate thread.

Coincidence?

A coincidence?

Probably not, especially after Obamabots threatened to murder an entire family unless the guy withdrew his petition demanding the Senator publish his birth certificate. After proving to the poor guy that they knew his address and could name his kids, he shut down his website and posted an apology.

I cannot blame him - it’s his family.

But the criminals who threatened him and his family should be hunted down and justice prevail. They’ve violated his civil rights and free speech rights - a Federal crime.
