QUOTATIONS FROM CHAIRMAN ANN |
July 11, 2008, 1:45 PM |
Pompous Vietnam-protesting "theologian" suspected of thievery - Embroiled in a prayer-theft scandal, liberal "theologian" Reinhold Niebuhr is quickly converted by The New York Times from a war-protesting, liberal theologian to "one of modern Christianity's towering figures." NYT: Serenity Prayer Stirs Up Doubt: Who Wrote It? On google, there are nearly as many entries for "Reinhold Niebuhr and Marxism" as there are for "Reinhold Niebuhr and God" But now that he's a thief (I guess he really didn't believe in property rights!), the Barry Lynn of his day is described as merely a "Protestant theologian." |
Now, a law librarian at Yale, using new databases of archival documents, has found newspaper clippings and a book from as far back as 1936 that quote close versions of the prayer. The New York Times article (in the link above) doesn't mention Niebuhr's background, but Coulter keeps a close eye on liberal disingenousness.
The re-writing of history continues by the liberals.
OK, WHERE ARE THE PICS????!!!!
This guy can’t be that good looking.
It's unusual to get the request so quickly...
:>)
LOL
Ping for later
I’m really slippin’.
I, too, thought someone wanted to see a photo of Reinhold Niebuhr. Duh!
I don’t think dismissing Niebuhr as a “liberal ‘theologian’” does him justice. He started out as an activist and pacifist but later became quite anti-communist and pro-defense. He was certainly on the Left even then but a long way from being a stereotypical ‘liberal’. And the scare quotes around ‘theologian’ are certainly unjustified.
He looks like Col. Klink without the monocle.
If you read the entire article, in fairness, the charges seem overblown. Notice Anne only says “suspected” of theft. Reinhold never made an unambiguous assertion of authorship, and no one can precisely date its origin, whether by Reinhold or not.
Let it go.

The essay is a fine crash course in Niebuhr and his thinking. Considering that both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama also name-check Niebuhr, I think Elie missed an opportunity to explore other political uses of the heavily influential pastor and political philosopher. (Elie mentions only Obamas enthusiasm for Niebuhr, and then only as an aside.)
Scares the hell out of him.
And some here.
That's what got us where we are now.
Let the "little" things go, and the big ones bite you in the butt. RE the GOP's attitude towards many liberal policies, thoughts and actions
Thanks goodness for Coulter and her "ilk."
It’s too bad she threw away years of building up a Conservative reputation by becoming lead cheerleader for the liberal fraud ex-Governor from Ratsachusetts.
Her support for Romney was just a ruse.
She was supporting Hilliary, even campaigned for her.
