WASHINGTON - John McCain, angling to win a bigger share of the fast-growing Latino vote, is taking the risky step of placing an immigration overhaul at the center of his appeal.
The presumed Republican presidential nominee, who trails Barack Obama among Latinos, had been focused on assuring conservatives that securing the U.S. border with Mexico would be his immigration priority. But McCain has adopted a message that gives equal weight to helping employers and immigrant workers and their families. That suggests that as president he would back the kind of legislation that has roiled many in his party -- most notably, a legalization plan for undocumented workers. McCain's approach was on display Tuesday when he told the League of United Latin American Citizens gathering here that he would deal "practically and humanely with those who came here, as my distant ancestors did, to build a better, safer life for their families."
And in a new series of advertisements in Spanish and English and a five-minute video, McCain talks about his long ties to Latinos and says immigrants' needs are "as important" as helping businesses and securing the border.
"We will solve it with legislation that's practical and fair," McCain says of immigration in the video, according to a script obtained by The Times. "We will abide by the law in every way. We will secure our borders first and ask border-state governors to certify that the border is secure.
"Then we will address the burden U.S. employers are enduring by creating a temporary-worker program, so employers can hire and people can have jobs. And as important, we will be sensitive to the immigrant workers and their families who are doing the work that must be done," he adds.
McCain steers clear of directly calling for a pathway to citizenship.

“Latino Immigrants” = “Illegal Aliens” right?
Empty rhetoric. The only ones that are likely to leave in the next four years are all liberals anyway.
trying very hard to think of some reason to support mclame, i’ve not had much luck, even if i decide to cast a vote, i cant imagine why i’ll send crusty any money. i figure i’ll let his liberal friends and the MSM support him same as they always have, surely they’ll come thru for maverick.
mccain cannot win the presidency but obama can lose it.
he appears to be following the same loser path the witch was casting spells for, (one hell of a strategy, left hoping the other guy drops dead or screws up so bad as to take himself out)
Not necessarily. Some immigrants are legal.
No he didn’t. He and the others were pre-selected without our true vote.
“The only ones that are likely to leave in the next four years are all liberals anyway.”
Are some kind of truthsayer or something? How do you know that? That’s the kind of stuff I believe only God would know.
Remember where your crusade started on this thread. Something about "fair and square"? The late primaries were stacked and the RNC threw its money behind McCain. Is that fair and square?
“He and the others were pre-selected without our true vote.”
You don’t have an option to write in a name on your ballot?
I shrugged it off when McCain called me nasty names when he was trying to ram amnesty down are throats but now it has become clear, he is my enemy.
Two points to remember:
The 2006 “Z-Visa” was to be given to 12 to 20 million illegals with (a) no home country background checks of any kind whatsoever, (b) no authenticated proof of identity, (c) no proof of alleged home country, (d) no medical checks of any kind, (e) no financial assets checks of any kind. Legal immigrants must go to great pains to meet all five of those preceding requirements, and without them any criminal (even Canadian or AMERICAN!) can assert an illegal presence and obtain a Z-Visa under a new fictitious name.
Point two: the presence of illegal alien labor is easily demonstrated to have caused a 40 to 60 percent reduction in unskilled labor pay since the 1970’s (i.e., it is easily proved that unskilled construction laborers would be paid $22 to $28 per hour were it not for the competition from illegal aliens).
“The late primaries were stacked and the RNC threw its money behind McCain.”
See my reply in post 28
Hey McCain this won’t work. The Open Borders Crowd will not vote for you in large numbers. Stop pandering and secure the borders now.
Please cite a source where McCain received RNC money in the primaries.
McCain is a losing proposition as far as conservatism goes. He will finish off the destruction of the GOP started by Bush.
Please respond to my post 33. Thank you.
McCain shifts his message toward Latino immigrants

and the conservative base said
Huh?
What the..?
You’re kidding?
Gid out’da here.
A near majority of CA hispanics voted in favor of Prop 187, a cut-off of non essential services to illegal immigrants, as recently as 1994. That changed after the LA Times, DNC, etc hammered home their "oppose illegal immigration = hate hispanics" line. Now the topic cannot even be discussed in polite company.
Racial identity politics is poison, and its beyond depressing to watch my(former) party engaging in them.
“He will finish off the destruction of the GOP started by Bush.”
Buah won two Presidential elections. Name who you want and if he ran. Thank you.
Yes. Assuming he can figure out what “original intent” means, he MIGHT attempt to appoint ONE originalist judge. When Democrat Senate shoots him down, he’ll say “Well, I tried.” and appoint a bunch of Souter clones.
Of course, Obama will be appointing Ginsberg clones from the start...
