"Find More, Use Less" [Sen. Lamar Alexander on Oil]
The Next Right ^ | July 11, 2008 | Senator Lamar Alexander

Posted on 07/12/2008 5:08:28 PM PDT by Uncle Ralph

We welcome Senator Alexander to the blog, and applaud his action to improve our energy situation. - Jon Henke

Americans are feeling the pain at the pump. Hundreds of my constituents have written me with their stories of how record-high fuel costs are affecting their family budgets. One Tennessean who wrote to me is a diabetic who is having trouble paying for her insulin shots due to rising gas prices. She says: "Gas for work or insulin to live. That is the decision I have had to make several times daily."

It's time for Congress to take action. Forty-four Senate Republicans are co-sponsoring legislation to address these record-high costs. Our bill – the Gas Price Reduction Act of 2008 – can be summed up in four words: "Find more, use less."

"Find more" means we would increase U.S. oil production by one-third through offshore exploration and Western states' oil shale. This will over time produce at least 3 million barrels a day. "Use less" means we would reduce imported oil by one-third by making it easier for millions of Americans to drive plug-in electric cars and trucks. This will over time reduce Americans' use of oil by 4 million barrels a day. Just those three provisions – deep sea exploration, Western shale, and plug-in cars – will allow us to cut our oil imports in half.

Unfortunately, most Democrats still insist on trying to repeal half the law of supply and demand.

Instead of Economics 101, we might call this new theory "Obamanomics."

When we say "offshore exploration," they say "No, we can't." When we say "oil shale development," they say "No, we can't." When we say "more nuclear power for clean electricity to power plug-in cars and trucks," they say "No, we can't."

They would rather our country beg Saudi Arabia and other countries for more oil when we already have larger reserves than the Saudis offshore and in shale in Western states.

Republicans will do BOTH – find more and use less – and we intend to work hard and in good faith to find a way for Democrats to say "yes we can," too.

Tell them that we can’t siphon our way out of this mess the way Pelosi suggests (tap NSOR).

I keep hearing the dem. response to more drilling and domestic development is that the oil co. already have permits for millions of acres that they are not using. Is there a Repub. response to this, if so, where is it????

Yeah I wrote to my congress critters twice this week. Told them thanks for the bank failures, and doubling in fuel prices since the Dem’s have been in charge. Not to mention the housing meltdown. I just asked them to allow Nuclear, and Drilling instead of watching our economy tank. I fear that is what they really want for political reasons, or worse reasons.

Thackney, this question is up your alley:

I keep hearing the dem. response to more drilling and domestic development is that the oil co. already have permits for millions of acres that they are not using. Is there a Repub. response to this, if so, where is it????

F**K anyone who tells the people to use less oil. American uses about the same amount of oil it did 30 years ago, yet at the same time we have have 84 million more people and 100% more GDP.

This addicted to oil BS needs to stop.

We need to break our addiction to Socialist Government a lot more than we need to break our addiction to oil.

Well, if we're being told to use less because of our addiction, global warming, or carbon footprints then yes.

However, any engineer with his salt will strive for efficiency, and any society should maximize the use of its resources.

That was my question as well. What about ANWR?? and why on earth should we stop at only 3 % when we can be completely energy independent?

Why not building new refineries? And bring the gov’s together to agree on one refined standard nation wide? That would drastically cut down the refining expense! Regardless of what innovation come along, we need OIL to develop it, and to get the infrastructure built around the country. We CANNOT run the entire national infrastructure on what is to come in the future. Promises, plans, inventions are all well and good, but in the meantime, lets start talking some common sense for a change, huh Congress? The Dems problem is they know some of their own are going to vote for drilling, therefore they table the drill bills and won't allow a vote. They will not have any part of the energy crisis being solved by Republicans, and while a Republican is in the White House. They are willing to bankrupt us all, and the economy in order to prevent that from happening. Just plain EVIL!
