McCain likely to get Conservative line in N.Y.

John McCain is expected to have New York's Conservative Party line in the November presidential election, which could provide him with symbolic value nationally but not enough votes to win in a Democratic-leaning state where recent polls show Barack Obama with a comfortable lead.

New York Conservative Party Chairman Mike Long said in an interview today that the expected September endorsement of McCain would be "a plus" for the Arizona senator among conservative voters around the country because New York is the only place with a statewide ballot line for the Conservative Party.

McCain has clear conservative credentials - leadership on the war on terrorism, support for tax cuts, advocacy for cutting federal spending and opposition to activist judges, according to Long.

The last time the Conservative Party mattered in a presidential election was in 1980, when the 256,000 votes Ronald Reagan received on that line provided him with his margin of victory in New York over President Carter.

The Conservative Party should give its line to a real conservatiive. If Mke Long plans to give it to another RINO, the Conservative Party ought to just fold up its tent and join forces with the New York GOP>

It pains me to say that — my parents were involved with the founding of the party. My dad bound up the party’s first petitions to go to Albany. But the party seems to hvae lost its vision somewhere along the line.

The Conservative Party would get more votes with a real conservtive on the line.

The Conservative Party is nothing more than a patronage machine for Mike Long and his family. They endorsed Pataki because George Elmer gave Mike's daughter a job for Crissake.

The only bigger joke in NY politics is the Right to Life party, who I believe lost their position on the ballot.

McCain should get the nod from the Conservative Party. He has his issues but he is coming around.

1. He now supports security first on immigration.

2. He supports making the Bush tax cuts permanent.

3. He has always been the conservative on taxes, smaller government, and restraining spending.

4. He is pro-life.

5. He is pro-marriage defined as being between a man and a woman and has a career record of opposing adding special rights for sexual activists to employment and hate crimes legislation.

6. He is pro-American strength and has not wavered on Iraq or the War on Terror.

7. He has a history of supporting conservative judges. He voted for Alito and Roberts and even defended Judge Bork during the Reagan years. He is hardly a liberal on the issue of judges.

8. He now supports offshore drilling and has said he believes that states should have the right to decide whether they want to allow drilling in places like ANWR.

He is not the perfect conservative candidate but neither was GW Bush but I don’t remember nearly the opposition to him. McCain did vote against that horrible drug benefit plan that President Bush put forward.

The one thing that is certain is that McCain will not betray America to weakness. He will support our troops and American interests. As for a real conservative candidate who would that be? I don’t see any perfect conservatives running. I did see a lot of mock conservatives running. I personally am refreshed we didn’t get a Romney, Huckabee, or Paul and on that note I think we all can agree we could’ve ended up with much worse than a War Hero to carry the banner for us.

Remember when Pataki got himself a third line (the Freedom Party) and it accidentally got 50,012 votes for him, thus qualifying for the ballot for four years.

If conservatives had been smart, they would have registered Freedom in significant numbers and taken the thing over.

McCain is certainly not conservative enough for most Freepers, myself included. But for God’s sake, consider the terrible alternative. The Conservative Party MUST support John McCain and not even consider running another candidate. If we were to split the Republican vote at a time like this, the Obama Gang would be popping the Champagne corks at an act of such monumental stupidity!
Like you,I too want another Ronald Reagan in the White House,( and 95% of the House & Senate & a Con. SCOTUS )
But,we have to play the cards that we are dealt.
Saving this country from the nightmare of an Obama White House is the bottom line!
ALL FReepers MUST support John McCain! The alternative would be a disaster!

No we can't all agree, McCain was on the bottom of my list. And who were you calling "mock conservatives"? Fred Thompson? Duncan Hunter? Your post is one big spin on why it is good to vote for a flip flopper.

SCOTUS appointments? Well, he thinks Alito is too conservative but Ginsburg is highly qualified. Oh, BTW, McCain voted for Ginsburg and Souter and would likely vet any nominee with his good buddy Kennedy. I highly doubt McCain would want a new justice who would strike down McCain/Finegold and therefore would pick someone who the Democrats would be happy to "reach across the aisle" and confirm. It won't be a conservative.

McCain? No Way.

Re: McCain? No Way!

No way? All FReepers understand your feelings on this.

BUT, It’s either McCain or Obama.

We simply cannot afford to allow that Racist lying fraud to win the White House, because his opponent was not conservative enough for us!
As surely as the Sun rises,if,(God Forbid) Obama & the Democrats should win it all this year,i.e. House,Senate & White House, those traitorous scum will do all in their power to drag this nation down into Communist Dictatorship!

just because mccain is a million times better than obama doesn’t mean we should call him a “conservative.”

NYCON, since so many New Yorker’s take pleasure in sitting on two states voter registration roles as property holders (nameingly Florida, as the 2nd state) it might be the year to “winter” early in Florida and cast the one vote where it actually counts in the general election.

So that is how a conservative is judged these days? By being slightly less horrible than a liberal dem?

You don’t understand, “flip-flopper” is a GOOD thing this year. “Our” guy is doing it.

Close.

A Republican is judged these days as being significantly less horrible than a marxist dem.

The Conservative Party endorsed RINO Pataki, it’s a party without principles in NY and the line will be meaningless as McLame will still lose New York.
