Former Gov. Mitt Romney, who's increasingly visible on the campaign trail on behalf of the man who beat him for the Republican presidential nomination, Sen. John McCain, is about to forgive the $45 million he loaned himself for the primary struggles.
The legal move of filing papers with the Federal Election Commission re-declaring Romney's loans as contributions is imminent, according to a report by Michael Kranish on the Boston Globe website. It would clear the legal deck for Romney to become a candidate again as, oh, say, the vice presidential Republican running mate of McCain.

Romney, whose personal fortune is estimated north of $190 million, is already marshalling on McCain's behalf his vast national donor network, which supplied another $65 million to Romney's unsuccessful campaign.
Although there appeared to be some personal frictions between the two men during primary debates, especially over campaign finance reform, which the senator has championed, McCain has more recently been openly appreciative of Romney's vigorous campaign grunt work in the months since the Arizonan clinched the GOP nomination.
"I'm appreciative every time I see Mitt on television on my behalf," McCain said earlier this week. "He does a better job for me than he did for himself, as a matter of fact."

Does it follow that Hillary has to forgive her loan to get back in this??
Back-handed compliment: “”He does a better job for me than he did for himself, as a matter of fact.”
That’s funny. Anyway, I for one would welcome Romney as the VP.
I am thinking that Romney has a very good chance of being the Vice Presidential pick. Tom Ridge seems to have faded . . not hearing much about Sarah Palin.
Pawlenty doesn’t impress in his television appearances, while Romney always comes off well. Ron Portman from Ohio also has had some lackluster appearances as a McCain surrogate.
That's assuming Hillary doesn't beat him to it!

Mitt is this Conservative's first choice for a McCain veep.
There is no perfect candidate, but I'm genuinely afraid for our great Country (and my two "kids" who wear it's uniform currently) if Marxist Obama moves into the White House.
Mitt's economic bona fides as well as his adroit ability to communicate will help McCain beat Marxist Obama.
If Mister McCain chooses Mitt as Veep, and if McCain chooses to be Republican on important issues (ILLEGAL ALIENS INCLUDED) then we have a glimmer of a chance.
Democrats' docile RINO Romney: "Anything else you want?
I've incorporated fascist HillaryCARE without a single citizen vote,
ordered the refusing clerks to marry gays and disobey the Mass. Consitution or be fired and punished by me,
wiped out the Massachusetts GOP so that Deval Patrick can be the next Governor,
brought in millions of illegal aliens to vote for you Democrats,
put in your liberal criminal-supporting judges while ignoring and overlooking the GOP candidates,
and, of course, covered up the BIG-DIG fiasco and so much more.
It is good to be your chosen Dictator."
“. . not hearing much about Sarah Palin.”
Very disappointing to hear this, McCain needs something different, something that will energize his campaign, Sarah Palin as his VP would do that. She’s a bona fide conservative who would galvanize conservative, Christian, Second Amendment, blue collar, pro life, family values and women voters around Mac. I fear Romney’s flip flops and Mormon religion (fair or not) will hurt him with the conservative base McCain needs to win.
No Hillary is arm twisting the Obama Camp to pay her loans off in return for her support. Obama would gain my respect if he’d tell her publicly to jump a rope...
Condi Rice...although I think Romney can add some energy to the ticket.
Romney: Make all the promises you have to...
Guilty
Not Guilty
There is but one logical choice.
The "Warrior and the Woman" (will Win BIG
attacting a large fraction of the pro-Hillary frustrated Democrat women.)
He’s got a winning smile. I think he’s earned the VP slot. I don’t care what Dick Morris says.
Blah, blah, blah....Obviously, you’re not familiar with Reagan’s llth commandment.
Reagan's 11th commandment applies to Republicans, not Democrats.
Osama could then get Cynthia McKinney as VP and then Romney and she could duke it out!
Yes, I think she’d be a gustsy choice, but then there’s the logical choice that talks money and Romney has money.
She would be a great cabinet member.
It looks to me like Romney’s the guy. Overall, I think he’ll be a good addition to the ticket. His economic expertise is unquestioned ... an area where McCain could use a little expertise.
I disagree with portions of his record as Mass Governor ... but I get the feeling that Romney is more conservative than his record would indicate. He was governor of a very liberal state, with a very liberal constituency ... it only stands to reason that Romney would have to compromise heavily in order to represent his constituents, and in order to accomplish even the most modest of conservative goals in such a liberal climate.
McCain/Romney 2008 ... it isn’t ideal, but its acceptable.
H
Dem women would never vote for her...too good looking.
A young McCain was impressive.
I think Sarah would be a great pick. I would especially like to see her demonstrate her shooting abilities (support for the Second Amendment) on a skeet or trap range. Wouldn’t it be funny to watch Sarah knock down more clay targets then say Jack Reed, Hillary, Chuck Hagel or Evan Bayh?
