Iraqi PM disputes report on withdrawal plan
CNN ^

A German magazine quoted Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki as saying that he backed a proposal by presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq within 16 months. Nuri al-Maliki told Der Spiegel that he favors a "limited" tenure for coalition troops in Iraq.

Nuri al-Maliki told Der Spiegel that he favors a "limited" tenure for coalition troops in Iraq.

"U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months," he said in an interview with Der Spiegel that was released Saturday.

"That, we think, would be the right time frame for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes," he said.

But a spokesman for al-Maliki said his remarks "were misunderstood, mistranslated and not conveyed accurately."

Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said the possibility of troop withdrawal was based on the continuance of security improvements, echoing statements that the White House made Friday after a meeting between al-Maliki and U.S. President Bush.

It appears that the whole controversy from Der Spiegel was a scam. Still, it worked to help Obama, which was the object.

It should not help Obama if the OTHER SIDE in a negotiation agrees with him. But then he is never on our side. Obama is interfering in those negotiations.

They do what the media likes to do when it doesn’t fit their views ... they mislead or even outright lie. Oh looky here, top of the hour ABC radio news is still misleading their listeners about Maliki’s statements.

dude- hussien obama could take a dump in the middle of the road in broad daylight and the liberal media will make it seems as though he did something great....it is an uphill fight with a far leftist who the media loves because he’s black, has a chip on his shoulder and is ready to blame America at the drop of a hat.....

Funny how Obama's 16 month time frame fits "Bush's" tentative withdrawal plan....which was stated.....months ago...BUT ALWAYS carried a stipulation of "conditions on the ground".

Obama is simply using Bush's goals...A far cry from Obama's IMMEDIATE WITHDRAWAL dating back...6 months at the most.

And of course Obama's assessment was that the surge was a total, complete failure.

Obama simply knows nothing about war...He only understands "control" and communism.

////////////////////////////////////////

He didn't jump to embrace Obama’s 14 month time line in Jan 06 when the gov’t would have been overrun by islamists. To believe that this government will be comfortable embracing an American occupation of Iraq is naive and foolish. They are glad to be rid of Sadam but not in return for infidels occupying the “sacred” lands. You are right not to trust this guy. Also All Islam wants an Obama presidency because they perceive him as the “weak horse” A backhand slap at McCain by supporting Obama's position makes BHO look presidential and helps him get elected.

As of 8:11 PM, the Drudgereport still ha the original, incomplete, and misquoted story on his headlines.

Not sure what's going on with Drudge when CNN can beat him to the punch with a follow up correction to the original story - especially this one.

Guess I stick with Free Republic if I want truly cutting edge updates. To hell with Matt Drudge.

It's tough negotiating with these tribal powers.

Our forefathers suggested TWO Presidents....which was quickly seen as two men disagreeing FOREVER on the simplest of problems.
