The newly elected head of the nation's largest teachers union on Monday called on school districts nationwide to create community schools that would offer services to students and their families ranging from health care to recreation.

Speaking to about 3,300 conventioneers at Navy Pier, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten said minority students need the help to bridge the achievement gap between them and their white counterparts.

Parents -

it is time to fight the SOCIALIST INDOCTRINE CENTERS - Formerly Known as the PUBLIC/GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS. It is up to you to tell the SOCIALISTS that you are going to fight back.

If you don't do it, who will??? If you want your kids to be nice little SOCIALISTS, let them stay in the Socialist INDOCTRINE CENTERS. If you want them to be Freedom Loving AMERICANS -- Home school them. Yes, parents, if not YOU who will??

Yes, I know some can't homeschool - ie single moms - and dads, but yes, you can. Ask around your nieghborhood if there are homeschoolers, and see if you can get your kids into it.

Time for YOUNG AMERICANS to fight back against CREEPING SOCIALISM that the TRASH in Washington (including Obama who wants a secret police) are trying to force DOWN OUR THROATS!!

Lets fight for our RIGHTS!!

Randi Weingarten is a lesbian.

We need to fight the SOCIALIST INDOCTRINE CENTERS -- not wiether someone is GAY! Yes, that shouldn't be an issue. As Martin Luther King said, "the chacter of themself, not the color of their skin. And gays (I have 3 friends who are gay teens) should be judged by their character - not if they are GAY or NOT.

Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., where the mayors control the local schools and she said they could get the money to pay for social services.

I can't believe anybody would use Washington D.C. as a an example of how to administrate a school district.

Or Chicago, Philadelphia, New York or any PUBLIC SCHOOLS!!

Parents + Homescolars = GREAT AMERICANS!!

kids + Teacher unions + government Schools = SOCIALISTS!!

Socialism kills freedom. Period.

How to stop it? Get the kiddos out of the schools would be a good first step. The homosexuals are in the school hierarchy and your kids are the target. They are NOT tolerant of hetero’s at all. They want fresh meat for their expanding needs and power.

Socialism kills freedom.

This is something a lot of people COULD do, if there is the will.

I remember a few years ago, I believe it was the head of the NY Teachers Union got asked a basic math question, and she had no clue. They’re not even educators, they’re hacks. I’d think the head of a teachers union should be darn educated, at least be capable of substitute teaching through high school grades.

This program sounds a bit like what your solution for failing schools filled with children from disfunctional families...replace the disfunctional families...keep the kids off the street with extended day and/or year as the KIPP schools do.

I agree that teachers elected Randi Weingarten, but feel the need to point out that only teachers who are members of the NEA did so — in many states, teachers belong to the NEA only because they are required to do so as a condition of employment.

Some teachers who are required to join the union (including some FReeper teachers!) are fighting the NEA’s liberal agenda, and in states such as mine, many teachers do not belong to the NEA because we aren’t required to and we disagree with its positions.

Speaking to about 3,300 conventioneers at Navy Pier, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten (From the article)

Only ***ONE** group of people is **completely** responsible for Weingarten being elected to head the NEA!

While I do not deny the many similarities between the two groups, the AFT is NOT the NEA.

That you are willing to make such an obvious mistake, in regard to an article YOU posted leaves me shaking my head. I do not believe you would permit one of your so-called "government school defenders" to slide on such an obvious error.

It’s time to end government involvement in education. To begin, parents should send their children to private schools instead of the socialist public school system. Not enough private schools? Don’t worry, if there is a demand for a product, education companies will be created or be expanded to meet the demand. Eventually the public schools will close due to lack of customers. In most locations, this would cut state and local taxes by 50%.

Would half of your state and local taxes pay the tuition for a year at a private school?

The academically strong private schools in this area (even the church supported ones) charge more in tuition than the average per-pupil price of the public schools.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

There is one big difference between what I advocate for children in dysfunctional homes and what Weingarten is proposing.

I am aiming for a completely privatized system of K-12 education. In a private system some children would be homeschooled. Some would use on-line programs. There would be dame schools and one room school houses. Some larger day care centers would offer 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade. There would be Waldon schools, Montessori schools, and Challenger Schools. Some children would attend boarding schools, and others would attend the typical brick and mortar (prison-like) school. Parents would be completely free to choose the schooling that best suits their child's needs and that would be most convenient for the family.

The KIPP model of schooling would be one of likely hundreds of options open to parents.

Weingarten is essentially prescribing a one-size-fits-all cradle to grave communistic welfare system for all children.

In New Jersey and New York, I don't doubt it, because those are the top two states in per-pupil spending in the country.

I'm curious, though....there is also a higher percentage of Catholics in that area than in this area. Do the dioceses subsidize the churches where you are? Does that account for some of the difference?

....as long as they could afford it.
