[South Dakota] Planned Parenthood Abortion Center Closes Instead of Following New Law

Sioux Falls, SD -- Monday was the first day that Planned Parenthood, which operates the only abortion business in South Dakota, had to comply with a new state law telling women the truth about abortion. Rather than tell women abortion kills children and has numerous risks, Planned Parenthood closed its doors.

The state law, which the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld last week, required abortion practitioners to inform every woman that she is terminating the life of a human being.

It requires giving her information about the mental health complications such as a high risk of depression and suicide and physical problems like hemorrhage infection, premature births of subsequent pregnancies, and infertility.

The woman considering the abortion receives a chance to sign in writing that she received the information and abortion practitioners who don't comply face losing their medical license, two years in prison and a possible medical malpractice lawsuit.

Whether the closing is temporary or permanent remains to be seen.

Dr. Allen Unruh, a leading pro-life advocate who works with Alpha Pregnancy Center, told LifeNews.com that Monday was a historic day.

"Time will tell if Planned Parenthood plans to re-open it’s doors, but as for now, the regular abortions were canceled today as the abortionist refused to show up," he explained.

"We will see if any other abortionists plan to take the risks involved with full disclosure of what they do to women and their unborn children," he added.

South Dakota Attorney General Larry Long said last week the law would go into effect on Saturday following a decision earlier this month by a federal appeals court saying it's constitutional.

The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the statute and, then, on Thursday, Planned Parenthood’s application to enjoin the statute following the appeals court decision failed.

The measure specifically tells them to tell women "the abortion will terminate the life of a whole, separate, unique, living human being," defined as a human being. It also requires that the abortion practitioner give women the contact information of a local pregnancy center, as well other information about her health risks and pregnancy support available.

The federal appeals court cited the portion of the Supreme Court's recent Gonzales v. Carhart decision on partial-birth abortion referring to the post-abortion problems women experience.

The court indicated "some women come to regret their choice to abort the infant life they once created and sustained. Severe depression and loss of esteem can follow.”

Any good physician prior to any surgical procedure will inform the patient of risks involved.....wait a minute, I do not think good physicians are employed by planned parenthood.

Planned Parenthood employs only the ones who've ceremonially trampled the Hippocratic Oath under their feet.

While LifeNews.com puts out topics dear to the heart of every pro-lifer, they cheat via hyperbole and even falsehood. No where in this article is Planned Parenthood’s reason for closing. It is insinuated that it is due to the new law. It would have been easy just to ask Planned Parenthood-—but, no.

Good - one less abortuarium on this earth. One of Obama’s missions will be to reverse the fortunes of the infanticide brokers.

It is so interesting to me, that one of the best OBGYN doctor's daughter heads up Planned Parenthood in SD.

I'm sure Dr. Looby is long since retired. I knew Kate Looby decades ago. Too much personal info, I suppose. It's a shame she's an abort supporter.

Call 'em up yourself then get back and tell us what they said.

Be sure to identify yourself as coming from Free Republic ~ you know, just like you were a regular newzie.

Bet they tell you to go pound sand.

You don't really expect Planned Parenthood to tell the truth do you? Get serious!

Not really. PP taped a sign to its door saying it would be closing at 3 p.m. It was closed all day. At least five women, according to the doctor whose blog is linked in post 1, showed up and left. The doctor writes, These women weren't even notified the clinic would not be able to "serve" them today. Planned Parenthood is in CYA mode - they don't care about women - this is big business. It's not medicine - it's not health care - this is a cartel that kills and covers their trail.

I have often wondered if the abortionists were the BMTMS... (barely made it through medical school)

Unfortunately, I don’t think so. They’re intelligent individuals committed to their ideaology, though when it comes to morals, they are lacking a soul.

No, not at all.

But, that wasn't my point.

I agree.

But that wasn't my point.

The credibility of LifeNews needs some help because they are more agenda driven than news driven, a position which I have noticed for the past year. They do need to keep an eye on their credibility if they want to proselytize their agenda effectively to those who are not part of the choir.

Both Iowa and Minnesota are very close to Sioux Falls, SD. They’ll probably set up shop just across the border.

Wow. This is gonna hurt. Planned Parenthood, along with the rest of the multi-billion dollar abortion industry, is a prime launderer of Democrat party campaign dough. Maybe even bigger than the “jackpot justice” lawsuit lawyers lobby.

Yep even Des Moines is only 2 hours away from Sioux Falls, and I believe they have an abortion clinic there.

I take it Planned Parenthood didn't have the stomach to tell women the truth.

Abortion is not about saving women’s lives!

Studies Find Abortions Have Long-Term Effects

An Unexpected Correlation: The Legacy of Abortion

Study: Previous Abortions Linked With Pre-Term Birth and Cerebral Palsy

48,589,993

Total Abortions since 1973

------------------------------------------------------------

Why the drop after 1960? (in deaths of women from illegal abortions)

The reasons were new and better antibiotics, better surgery and the establishment of intensive care units in hospitals. This was in the face of a rising population. Between 1967 and 1970 sixteen states legalized abortion. In most it was limited, only for rape, incest and severe fetal handicap (life of mother was legal in all states). There were two big exceptions — California in 1967, and New York in 1970 allowed abortion on demand. Now look at the chart carefully.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Abortion Statistics - Decision to Have an Abortion (U.S.)

· 25.5% of women deciding to have an abortion want to postpone childbearing

· 21.3% of women cannot afford a baby

· 14.1% of women have a relationship issue or their partner does not want a child

· 12.2% of women are too young (their parents or others object to the pregnancy)

· 10.8% of women feel a child will disrupt their education or career

· 7.9% of women want no (more) children

· 3.3% of women have an abortion due to a risk to fetal health

2.8% of women have an abortion due to a risk to maternal health

----------------------------------------------------------------------

So how many women’s lives have been saved by abortion?

Only about 3% of abortions since 1972 were reported to be “due to a risk to maternal health.” A reasonable person would recognize that not all of those cases represent a lethal risk. But let’s say they did. That means that nearly 45 million fetuses were butchered to save the lives of about 1.3 million women. Or put another way; 35 babies are killed to save each woman.

Abortion was legal in all 50 states prior to Roe v. Wade in cases of danger to the life of the woman.

That’s actually rather amazing. It would be interesting to see what would happen if this became a national law.

I wonder how many physicians would be willing to turn in their medical license to go around these laws. Not many I suspect.

Very nice. It’s about time.
