In a little intramural joshing in the magazine world, Vanity Fair today posted a send-up of the by-now infamous New Yorker cover meant to be a satire of attacks on Barack Obama's patriotism.
The New Yorker's version showed Democrat Obama in Muslim garb fist-bumping his wife Michelle while the American flag burned in the fireplace under a portrait of Osama bin Laden.

And the left will crow it is accurate, after decrying the Obama cover...
And no offense taken here. I got a chuckle out of it.
YAWN ... this is about as creative as the idiots on the Daily Show saying ..
“you know, we cant do that many Obama jokes. There’s really not much to make fun of there. Really.”
I mean really, is that the best they can come up with?
Kristinn, tell Jim that it is shame on the site for removing the Vanity Fair image. At least give us a reason. What are they afraid of? That Obama or one of his surrogates will issue a fatwa?
Yes, it’s a likable enough little cartoon. I enjoyed the goofy picture of President Bush over the fire.
LOL, they both got laughs out of me. May God help our humorless country and save us from oppression by grim-faced ideologues who take themselves so seriously.
From my understanding, no.
No. See post #8
McThuselah...
On what basis does Vanity Fair have McCain burning the Constitution? Barack is to the Left of McCain in all ways. Second Amendment? Cut that sucker right out. Fairness Doctrine waiting in the wings to eliminate that First Amendment protection of political speech.
Socialists lie. Always.
Unless VF has SUDDENLY come to the understanding that McCain-Feingold was a limit on protected speech.
What does she hold in her left hand? I can’t tell.
At some point, these copyright restrictions become moot when everyone but FR is allowed to post the cover.
I’m actually getting tired of all these rags and their self-importance.
The NYer thought it was being hip and witty (which it make fun of the Right). Vanity Fair is just being mean and vindictive. And undoubtedly, the story they right won’t be excoriating the Left for its portrayal of McCain.
What a bunch of pissy little girls.
The walker is the only mildly funny thing about it. Other than that it is very lame.

...but at night they become... Super Twins! Saving the planet from destruction!

Dang, I love making fun of Juan McAmnesty MeCain
That is a good point. Of course this is Jim’s house and he gets to set the rules. But we don’t like to see Jim get pushed around by the big boys when everyone else out there is running with the cover. I’m not sure that it is legal to prevent someone from hot linking it here.
They’re saying McCain is tossing the Constitution from the Patriot Act, no doubt. That one sends liberals shrieking into the night.
Agreed. And furthermore, the Vanity Fair cartoonist put the lump on the wrong side of McCain's face.
There is no originality to it. It just tries to copies the New Yorker cover. There is nothing there except the age thing that has any meat to it. Parody is only funny if there is truth behind it. Very lame. It is like calling someone a bugger, and the only thing they can come back with is so are you.
...and Jim out of court.
The pill bottles are a bit of a low blow.
The rest is rather unoriginal- a walker and a picture of Bush? That’s all they could come up with?
I’m running it past the Boss. Gotta run, it’s Happy Hour.
Burning Constitution too. And a fist bump that is out of character for the McCains.
"We're doing jokes about people in his orbit, not really about him," said Mike Sweeney, the head writer for O'Brien on "Late Night." The jokes will come, representatives of all the late-night shows said, as soon as Obama does or says something that defines him - in comedy terms.
[snip]
But so far, no true punch lines have landed. Why? The reason cited by most of those involved in the shows is that a fundamental factor is so far missing in Obama: There is no comedic "take" on him, nothing easy to turn to for an easy laugh, like allegations of Bill Clinton's womanizing, or President George W. Bush's goofy bumbling or Al Gore's robotic persona.
"The thing is, he's not buffoonish in any way," said Mike Barry, who started writing political jokes for Johnny Carson's monologues in the waning days of the Johnson administration and has lambasted every presidential candidate since, most recently for Letterman. "He's not a comical figure," Barry said.
The folks who enjoy making fun of McCain are the same who wouldn’t last a day let alone 5 years as a POW
The Obama cartoon is tame compared this this portrayal of Condi Rice from the LA Weekly.
Condoleezza Rice, thuggin' for democracy (more liberal racist imagery) (LA Weakly 1-20-05)

Not much noise but a lot of crickets chirping in the MSM when it appeared.
Ironically because we cannot discuss the exact contents of the McCain Vanity Fair cover with an illustration of said cover, we are left to find other things to discuss in this thread. Ugly bits of double standards from the MSM.
Honstly that is not an exact quote.
The guy who did Ben Stein’s money, whats his name (escapes me), who does Comedy Central stuff, was reported to have said that.
Memo to comedy central:
Start with the fact that he’s an arrogant empty suit who is completely out of his league in running for President after just a year or two in the Senate.
Layer on the fact that his campaign is a faux-artifice of him being the Obamessiah and his followers are cultic kool-aid drinkers.
Work from there.
Jimmy Kimmel
IE - remember all the Rush parodies of McCain.
No group or individual is pandered to. If it is tried, it will get un-pandered quite quickly.
Many stories appear here before the MSM even knows they are “stories.”
Even before Drudge sometimes.
Sometimes even Drudge suppresses a story, but it will be seen here.
A large amount of news events and political decisions are mentioned here that the liberals-—and conservatives to some degree-—do not want out to the masses of citizens in the USA.
Virtually all prominent politically oriented radio and TV talk show hosts have people watching Free Republic closely.
AP and many others do not want FR to use it's material and are waiting for an opportunity to sue the site out of existence. Which has been tried before.
Yes, other news sources—including Internet sites—are not restricted as we are. They don't pose the danger to the propaganda put out there in massive quantities that FR does.
I don't see it as a negative, but as a badge of honor.
Look what happened when the NYT told McCain to rewrite his op-ed to more reflect Obama’s previous one.
McCain's op-ed is being talked about all over the airwaves, TV, radio and print media.
IMO Free Republic becomes stronger the more those that wish to control and direct information try to restrict the site.
Any entity that tries to push Free Republic down will see it coming out from between their fingers stronger, in more directions, and more prolific then ever.
Rush played an 8 minute cut from Obama’s press conference today. 8 solid minutes of unique ums and uhs from the press conference (excerpted down from the rest of the answers and talking points).
Mark Twain. Or George Carlin.
Those guys crack me up. Even the stuff they didn’t really write.
Don’t get it. One is lampooning McCain with satire (A little truth, yes he is old and yes his wife had a drug problem years ago) and one is depicting Obama pretty accurately (funny that a liberal rag would would attempt satire with too much truth in it....duh...its not satire anymore).....what was the point again?
Thanks for the sourced link to justify my comment.
“The thing is, he’s not buffoonish in any way,” .... HUH?
He just repainted the American flag on his plane with an “O”, and earlier created his own version of the Presidential seal. that said ‘Vero Possumus’.
VERO POSSUMUS - what does it mean? “Anything’s possible” or “Fear the possum”?
What’s next for Obama? He plans to replace that exclusionary and non-diverse “White House” with the more multi-culturally acceptable “The Rainbow House”.
Meanwhile in Germany, Obama has ordered Germans not to bring signs, placards, backpacks, and “Seig Heil” salutes to his Berlin speech. He can count on the Germans to take orders well.
President Obama will next have a monument built ... A big O.
It will be placed on the Washington monument every time Congress is in session as a symbol of what Congress is doing to America.
I like the VF cover, it is funny.
And they DID do it already, in #20.
