Some in Portsmouth want mayor out over hotel comments

Some residents said Thursday they wish they could recall the mayor over comments he made about state Sen. Louise Lucas’ proposed hotel and conference center, while she said she is considering scaling back her project.

Earlier this week, the City Council voted to deny Lucas the use of up to $50 million of federal enterprise zone bonds. The bank-backed bonds would have provided Lucas with lower-cost financing.

During the meeting, Mayor James W. Holley called the Portsmouth Renaissance Hotel & Waterfront Conference Center a white hotel and said that Lucas’ project would have given the city a black hotel.

Marlon Baskerville, a Portsmouth resident and investor, said the council’s decision goes against what almost 600 people want to do for the city.

Many blacks gave money “because it was a chance for them to say: 'Here’s your answer, white America: Why can’t blacks do something for themselves?’”

Huh?

How would I know, and why would I care?

I am not interested in the racist crap, I am interested in the effect on my property values.

I stay in a “black hotel” regularly. Its a Springhill Suites franchisee. Its new, well run, and like every other Springhill Suites I stay in. It has many more black guests than other hotels in the local area. Its clearly owned and run by African-Americans (vice African or Caribbean natives). I can always get a room within per diem there and I recommend it highly.

All that is nice, but I don’t like the idea of classifying businesses as “black” or “white.” What is the point of that? Why do blacks get away with this, but scream if its the other way around? Why would blacks want to segregate themselves this way?

If Springhill Suites is a great chain, it’s a great chain and whoever owns it-—whether they are black, white, green or blue-—are doing a great job and are to be commended.

It's like a Black Hole, except there is no T and you have to switch the E and the L around.

My point was that in that hotel (and in numerous other establishments in my experience) African Americans tend to patronize their own. They are not unique seen it with Vietnamese and other groups.

However, it does not seem to be a factor with whites.

Why do they do that? I guess I don’t get why we are still talking in terms of “their own.” Who is continuing to foster the separatist identity here, since, as you pointed out, whites do not go out of their way to patronize “their own”? Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
