Editor, Times-Dispatch:
Each year I get to celebrate Independence Day twice. On June 30 I celebrate my independence day and on July 4 I celebrate America's. This year is special, because it marks the 40th anniversary of my independence.
On June 30, 1968, I escaped Communist Cuba and a few months later I was in the United States to stay. That I happened to arrive in Richmond on Thanksgiving Day is just part of the story, but I digress.
I've thought a lot about the anniversary this year. The election-year rhetoric has made me think a lot about Cuba and what transpired there. In the late 1950s, most Cubans thought Cuba needed a change, and they were right. So when a young leader came along, every Cuban was at least receptive.
When the young leader spoke eloquently and passionately and denounced the old system, the press fell in love with him. They never questioned who his friends were or what he really believed in. When he said he would help the farmers and the poor and bring free medical care and education to all, everyone followed. When he said he would bring justice and equality to all, everyone said "Praise the Lord." And when the young leader said, "I will be for change and I'll bring you change," everyone yelled, "Viva Fidel!"
But nobody asked about the change, so by the time the executioner's guns went silent the people's guns had been taken away. By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry, and oppressed. By the time everyone received their free education it was worth nothing. By the time the press noticed, it was too late, because they were now working for him. By the time the change was finally implemented Cuba had been knocked down a couple of notches to Third-World status. By the time the change was over more than a million people had taken to boats, rafts, and inner tubes. You can call those who made it ashore anywhere else in the world the most fortunate Cubans. And now I'm back to the beginning of my story.
Luckily, we would never fall in America for a young leader who promised change without asking, what change? How will you carry it out? What will it cost America?
Would we?
Manuel Alvarez Jr. Sandy Hook.
Obama and the rest of his rat party have done everything they can to prevent Iraq from obtaining and sustaining freedom. Even now, Obama says he wouldn't have supported the surge...the money should have been spent here at home, or in Afghanistan or on a bridge to nowhere, or...
It makes me sick.
I will never forget the day the Iraqi people got to vote. They risked their lives...something we can't even comprehend. It is hard to fathom, that if the Democrats had their way, the Iraqi people would still be under the brutal dictatorship of Saddam!
Unbelievable!
My apologies, third try...

FROM EACH ACCORDING TO THEIR ABILITY TO THOSE ACCORDING TO THEIR NEEDS...
Oh my...
I finally managed to post a link to the Video. The title of the video is sarcasm.
Wow, thank you for that!
Yes, that is exactly who Obama sounds like and the way the press acts is the same way they acted then. Everyone was shocked, shocked I tell you when Fidel turned out to be so far left that Stalin looked conservative.
Yes, it is time for a reminder. It’s easy for liberal do nothings to talk about freedom, but they do not want to help anyone else obtain it nor do they want those who are free to keep that freedom.
The one ting I notice most is the mindless 25 to 35 years old just following along like sheep waiting to be slaughtered.
Talk about stupidity personified!!!!!!!!!!
OMG! Are people really that stupid? I missed a few but I knew the vast majority of those questions but if they had questioned me on the sidewalk they would probably have included the questions that I didn’t get correct.
That is what is so frightening and why this article is so powerful.
Look what became of Cuba and how many have died trying to ESCAPE?
WHY WHY WHY would anyone want that for America?
Sadly, I know way too many people who are voting for Obama. I am going to print out this article and encourage them to study history! Few know or understand it!
AMEN!
The Democrats don't learn by changing their belief systems when they are proven wrong. But they do learn how to campaign to win by NOT portraying their true intentions.
As Rush says, they can't say what they really believe. They "pretend" to have morality, "pretend" to have religion, "pretend" to love freedom, will even "pretend" to love this Country. They will run as conservatives (has happened here in Colorado with Gov Ritter and Ken Salazar), but when they win...their votes are lock step with the left wing Pelosi!
This Country is on the brink of being destroyed by islamicfacism, and our leaders are distracting the sheep with their new religion...
GLOBAL WARMING, CLIMATE CHANGE...
We are sooooo screwed!!!
I know a supposedly “educated woman” who’s just like the people in that video. She has absolutely no clue but she’s constantly telling people how smart she is by saying “I’m not stupid you know....afterall, I’m a nurse case manager”.
I think we need to institute an intelligence test in order to vote and I don’t care if people are “disenfranchised”! If you’re too stupid and don’t know the answers to simple questions, then you’re too stupid to vote!
I am familiar with Gov. Ritter, never did like him when he bacame involved the the Ramsey diabolical. He didn’t know what he was talking about, and several times got facts wrong. Denver politics, leave a lot to be desired. I liked the Governor, but he had no guts, only talk. Now we have Obama, who is all talk, no substance, give everything free of charge, honor him as the man of change, BS.
I have converted this to an email and have sent it out to the people in my address book. We need to share this so that people who aren’t as political as we on Free Republic, will have a chance to see it.
