Bombers kill 50 in Iraq, wound nearly 250

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Three female suicide bombers killed 28 people and wounded 92 in Baghdad on Monday as Shi'ite pilgrims flooded into the Iraqi capital for a major religious event, police said.

In the northern oil city of Kirkuk a bomb killed at least 22 people and wounded 150 at a protest against a controversial provincial elections law, Iraqi health and security officials said. The U.S. military said initial reports showed the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber.

The blasts marked one of the bloodiest days in months and underscored the fragility of recent security gains in Iraq, where violence is at its lowest level since early 2004.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the Baghdad blasts, but al Qaeda has often targeted Shi'ite pilgrims taking part in religious events in Iraq. It considers Shi'ism -- the majority Muslim denomination in Iraq -- heretical.

"These blasts that happened today will increase our determination to finalize the ceremony of this visit and defeat terrorism," pilgrim Taher Abd-Noor said.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has urged foreign dignitaries and firms to come to Iraq, citing stronger Iraqi security forces more able to keep the peace with less U.S. military help.

The apparently coordinated explosions in Baghdad shattered a period of relative calm in the city and took place despite a heavy security clampdown before the annual Shi'ite pilgrimage to the Kadhamiya shrine.

At least 1 million people are expected to take part in the pilgrimage, which peaks on Tuesday and marks the death of one of Shi'ite Islam's 12 imams.

The U.S. military said it was possible that three suicide bombers had carried out the attacks in the capital but did not specify if they were women. It

Cut ‘em off, fence ‘em in, throw ammo over the fence, and let ‘em all blow each other to hell. The sooner they’re all gone, the better !

So you suggest we keep tens of thousands of troops in Iraq for fear of a suicide bomber or an occasional truck bomb?

I'm suggesting the Iraqi PM keep his mouth out of the US Presidential campaign, or he'll get an outcome that will doom Iraqi sovereignty.

It would actually be very bad and undermine the effort of our troops.
That would be like reporting the same during Viet nam.
They did after the Tet Offensive in ‘68 which turned the tide against us.
The NVA was all but defeated and then we pulled out leaving them intact. had we stuck to it we would have left in victory not defeat or stalemate as is viewed today.
The media is sometimes our worst enemy.

The big news here that no one has seemed to catch is that there were three female suicide bombers.
females are thought to be less worthy to take on such a role in the cause for the radical Muslim. having three of them do this makes me think that they are running out of able bodied men to do their dirty work.

Yeah, al Qaeda made an appearance today as we pretty much expected.

We don't hear those horrid noises too much these days, but being that it's a big Shia holiday, they came out for it.

The good guys are on it and I hope they waste all of the scum behind these attacks. It's a lot easier to find that vermin these days with the Iraqis ratting them out.

They’ve been running out of people to do suicide attacks for quite a while now. Most of the AQI volunteers have wanted to be actual fighters against U.S. troops. AQI just tricked them into being suicide bombers. I read an account from a survivor of one such attack. He now preaches the anti-Jihad to others in Saudi Arabia. He felt very betrayed. AQI is just REALLY bad at making friends across the board.

It would actually be very bad and undermine the effort of our troops.
That would be like reporting the same during Viet nam.

Please explain:

How would reporting the number of people killed by muslim terrorists attacks all over the world, in England, Scotland, Spain, India, France, Afghanistan, etc., etc., etc. "undermine the effort of our troops"?

Please explain:

What experience did we have in Vietnam that compares with the worldwide muslim terrorism we face today?

I don't recall reports of VC and NVA bombing English and Spainish commuter trains, flying passenger jets into skyscrapers, etc.
The only activity along those lines was by our own home-grown Peaceniks and leftist college students, which was well covered by the media at that time.

The media is sometimes our worst enemy.

I agree.

I believe many people don't realize the enormity and extent of muslim terrorism and much of the blame rests with the MSM. Publishing a daily accounmt of muslim terrorist activity would go a long way to countering the false propaganda about Islamo-phobia, false accusations of discrimination against muslims, false and mis-leading stories of (non-existent) Moderate muslims.

That is why we never see such accounts in the MSM but do see frequent references to only the US military casualties. That is why the NY Times wants to publish more photos of dead US military but doesn't publish the same kinds of photos of other victims of muslim terrorism.

But wouldn’t it show that Alqaeda is supporting McCain? He’s the guy who wants to keep the troops there as long as needed.

he’s gonna have to keep our troops there. Or come out with a revised version of what he’s saying now.

That'll be - what - the sixth revised version of his so-called "plan"?

Not sure why they would be.

It's about the surge that he wouldn't have voted for -- see, it didn't work! Obama was right! Let's cheer for death and destruction, because it's more important to win an election! /s

Probably, in Obama-speak, it's just another sign that the Sunnis need to do more awakening, or that people wouldn't be blowing themselves up if they had job opportunities, or education, or (fill in the blank).

Trying to think like an Obama supporter risks killing too many brain cells in the effort, so I'll stop now.

Obama blames any and all violence on the presence of U.S. troops. He even said that the surge would make things worse.

Got an idea, increase our intelligence by 20 fold and deploy them to Iraq. Nice fertile training grounds and we are going to need it later on down the line, big time.

Former Iraqi prime minister: “We have failed”

Fri, 07/25/2008 - 2:02pm

Appearing today at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, former Iraqi Prime Minister and serving parliamentarian Ayad Allawi stressed that the security gains of the “surge” are only temporary. The surge “did succeed from a military point of view,” he told a small group of reporters before the event, but he emphasized that its gains could evaporate unless political reconciliation follows. “The first issue is reconciliation,” he said in the public session. But sitting down with his “friends” such as current President Jalal Talabani won’t do the trick. “We need to sit with those people who have been disenfranchised,” he said. “Except for terrorists.”
