BETHESDA, Maryland, July 26, 2008 (Reuters) — Researchers working on an artificial pancreas believe they are just a few years away from a nearly carefree way for people with diabetes to monitor blood and inject insulin as needed.

Such a mechanical pancreas could greatly reduce the need for fingersticks and injections of insulin that diabetics must now endure several times a day, researchers told a meeting this week at the National Institutes of Health.

As always, these advances in Med Tech are welcomed.

All type -1’s suffer and hopefully this can be used to lessen it a few degrees... that said, more private/public money must find a better way to be used to find the Cure and less on temporary tactics.

Lets face it, a Tech band-aid will NEVER be the same as a PERMAMENT Cure.

A little misleading, a pancreas does a lot more than produce insulin, but that aside, would be welcome for millions of diabetes patients.

FReepmail me if you want on or off the diabetes ping list.

There's no margin for failure with this technology. If there's too much insulin, then you're dead. Without enough glucose your brain doesn't work.

My mom died from pancreatic cancer and it scares me to death I’ll get it. I hope an artificial pancreas can help the thousands who get the awful cancer.

Indeed ... is this just relief for diabetics or a pardon for those with the pancreatic cancer death sentence?

I have heard this for the last 25 years. A cure and/or a replacement (transplants or artifical) are just 5 years away. I hope something happens, but I am not holding my breath.

Unfortunately “universal healthcare” will prevent all but the very rich from ever benefitting from this advancement.

Thanks for passing along.
Our 13 year old is starting a pump this week.
I hope a cure makes that obsolete.
