Olbermann: NRA 'Trying to Increase Deaths,' 2nd Amendment is for Muskets
NewsBusters ^ | July 31, 2008 | Brad Wilmouth

Posted on 07/31/2008 8:36:27 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

On Wednesday's Countdown show, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann claimed that pro-gun groups like the NRA "are trying to increase deaths by gun," as he used his "Worst Person" segment to attack a gun rights activist who infiltrated gun control groups to spy on them: "Mary Lou Sapone infiltrated the executive boards and learned the plans of organizations trying to decrease deaths by gun in this country, and apparently reported it back to organizations like the NRA, which are trying to increase deaths by gun in this country." A month earlier, on the June 26 show, after the Supreme Court struck down Washington, D.C.'s handgun ban, Olbermann named Justice Antonin Scalia, whom he called a "clown," as "Worst Person" as the Countdown host ridiculously claimed that the Second Amendment only applies to the types of weapons that existed in 1791, like muskets, to be used in a militia.

Olbermann: "You've got around 30,000 gun deaths in this country per year, another 75,000 non-fatal gun wounds, half the suicides are by gun; and this clown and his four colleagues decided that the 32-year-old ban on handguns in Washington, D.C., and the demand that firearms kept in the home be locked or disassembled was unconstitutional based on the Second Amendment." (Transcripts follow)

The Countdown host continued: "Despite years of fog created by the NRA and right-wing organizations, that isn't very complicated: For the purposes of forming a state militia, you're entitled to keep and bear arms. Obviously, those would have to be the kind of arms in use in 1791, when the Bill of Rights was passed -- the musket, the wheel-lock, the flint lock, the 13th century Chinese hand cannon. Stuff like that. Scalia, of course, simply decided that the militia part of the Second Amendment is some sort of quaint anachronism that he could happily ignore. And there's the beautiful thing about our country -- they say anybody can grow up to be a Supreme Court justice. And in Antonin Scalia, there's your proof, and tonight's 'Worst Person in the World'!"

Below are transcripts of relevant portions of the July 30 and the June 26 Countdown show on MSNBC:

#From the July 30 Countdown:

KEITH OLBERMANN: The runnerup, Mary McFate, also known as Mary Lou Sapone. Mother Jones magazine reports this today. Ms. McFate is a 60-something woman, a quirky but constant participant in gun control organizations, like the Brady Campaign. Ms. Sapone is a 60-something woman, a former figure in the National Rifle Association and wealthy pro-gun activist. The magazine says they're the same person. As Mary McFate, Mary Lou Sapone infiltrated the executive boards and learned the plans of organizations trying to decrease deaths by gun in this country, and apparently reported it back to organizations like the NRA, which are trying to increase deaths by gun in this country. In other words, she was a Benedict Arnold for the gun lobby.

#From the June 26 Countdown:

KEITH OLBERMANN: And our winner, Justice Antonin Scalia of the Supreme Court. You've got around 30,000 gun deaths in this country per year, another 75,000 non-fatal gun wounds, half the suicides are by gun; and this clown and his four colleagues decided that the 32-year-old ban on handguns in Washington, D.C., and the demand that firearms kept in the home be locked or disassembled was unconstitutional based on the Second Amendment. You remember the Second Amendment: "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Despite years of fog created by the NRA and right-wing organizations, that isn`t very complicated: For the purposes of forming a state militia, you're entitled to keep and bear arms. Obviously, those would have to be the kind of arms in use in 1791, when the Bill of Rights was passed -- the musket, the wheel-lock, the flint lock, the 13th century Chinese hand canon. Stuff like that. Scalia, of course, simply decided that the militia part of the Second Amendment is some sort of quaint anachronism that he could happily ignore. And there's the beautiful thing about our country -- they say anybody can grow up to be a Supreme Court justice. And in Antonin Scalia, there's your proof, and tonight's "Worst Person in the World"!

As Mary McFate, Mary Lou Sapone infiltrated the executive boards ... and apparently reported it back to organizations like the NRA ... In other words, she was a Benedict Arnold for the gun lobby.

The woman deserves the medal of valor.

Willfully subjecting herself to the mental rot that permeates the anti-gun lobby - risking her own sanity - just to expose their lies and help protect our rights, what's not heroic about that?

Ah, yes, that would mean, would it not, Keithy baby should be out of a job? Now that is a logical conclusion I could live with!

Could we settle on a straight right to the jaw, followed by a steel-toed boot in the crotch?

Just asking.

Obviously? Don't ever call on HIS right to a Free Press, even though instant mass communication wasn't in 1791 - obviously.

“The Worst Person in the World?” It must be a take-off on OReilly’s “Talking Points”, but it sounds SO childish!

Considering the NRA has had training programs and safety programs for much of its existence, this ought to be an actionable statement.

Sue them for defamation.

The average two-year-old in the midst of throwing a temper tantrum is more rational and logical than Olberman on his best day. The nonsense he spews is so convoluted and inane that counterarguments are futile; it’s like trying to reason with a rabid dog.

That bell shaped muzzle was for rapidly loading a half pound of lead or iron chunks.

...especially on a carriage or horseback (--made it easier to get the load in the muzzle).

Equal rights are for white, land owning, protestants

Free, white, male, 21, and a property owner. Not limited to protestants in the Maryland colony, anyway (many Catholics were Manor Lords, by royal land grant or descent from the original grantee).

The Left Wing “Crusader” is the most hypocritical kind. They wail endlessly about people losing civil rights, and being forced onto sides by a tyrant who enjoys murdering people. Yet not only do they love losing the Civil Rights to own one type of weapon, they also don’t realize that they are tolerating whatever they wail about to continue unchecked, that is the most political and vulnerable of us realize that we have something we must protect should some abuse of power render us helpless and weak. Josef Stalin and Adolf Hitler knew that and so did Mao. That is why all three were into Gun Control. They realized that the human being is a blinding spirit of light able to go down in a blaze of glory for the good of humanity and the desire of their beliefs and ideology.

I suppose that Olbermann sees a Fascist and Big Business CEO under every bed. Yet if indeed a Fascist makes him subserviant and a slave, instead of reaching for a musket, he will complain that they are not combing the streets looking for his “friends” and their weapons. What our beliefs on guns are would be very beneficial for Lefties, and there are Lefties on Pro-Gun sites, in fact many who are Pro-Second Amendment. What is surprising is that their leader, one of the most Leftist talking heads on TV is going all Gun Control on us. And this is a guy who sounds like he will battle to the death to protect his Right to Free Expression.

Since Keith is a Leftie he should support the 2nd Amendment against Racists, Homophobes, Anti-Semites and Misogynists(whether all are real or imagined) as a means of protection. Yet he doesn’t. To him Matthew Shepherd would’ve been a lot worse had he shot the guys who murdered him and killed them instead.

Somehow I wouldn’t be surprised if Sergei Andropov comes in here and gnashes his teeth about the zealots wanting to start another Civil War by what I am saying.

So? I say good for her. Keith O, of the flapping, manicured hands and light loafers, can say the same for his self proclaimed savior embodied in the sacrosanct self of Hussein Obama. Oh, wait, it isn’t spying when Liberals do it, right.

I thought that the Constitution was a living document for the liberals. And as such, the musket was the AR 15 of its day. Lift the ban on automatic weapons is the ‘living document’ conclusion, not muskets only. KO: Dingbat.
