More "undecided" voters in Michigan (Poll Obama 46.3% McCain 42%)

Right now 12 percent of Michigan’s registered voters are undecided, according to the Lansing-based polling firm EPIC/MRA. CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC all carried Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s speech on energy live from Michigan’s state capitol on Monday, perhaps a further underscore of the importance of the Wolverine state in Decision 2008.

“Historically Michigan has had a slight Democratic edge, but most polls show it to be a lot tighter than normal,” said NBC 25 political analyst Dr. Paul Rozycki, political science professor at Mott Community College.

A recent poll by Real Clear Politics shows Sen. Obama has 46.3% over 42% in support by Sen. McCain. That is a spread of 4.3 points. That seems fairly close, experts say, but the unusually high percentage of undecided voters kicks the speculation up a notch.

“12% is high compared to where it was in 2004 and 2000 just about at this juncture of the campaign where you had 6-8% as I recall,” said Bernie Porn, president of EPIC/MRA.

What’s more, that number is much higher in Mid-Michigan. EPIC/MRA reports 21% of voters in Flint and Saginaw consider themselves undecided. There could be several reasons for the trend. Rozycki pointed out a few factors in this year’s election- one being familiarity with the candidates.

“We have a new face on the scene, with Obama. A lot of people feel they don’t know him very well and they really want to get to know him. He’s reaching out in those areas,” Rozycki said.

He said John McCain had an edge. He won the Republican primary in Michigan in 2000, beating out then Governor George W. Bush. McCain has since come back to Michigan to campaign for other Republican congressional candidates in recent years. In Mid-Michigan, he has a slight edge according to EPIC/MRA. In Flint and Saginaw, McCain has 39% to Obama’s 35% in support.

The vote is either close or narrowing rapidly in MI, MA, CO, NV, all states where Romney on the ticket would help McCain.

Romeny is the only person yet mentioned who as VP would cost McCain the presidency.

There are 9 million evangelical voters in the USA. And if you remove 9 million Evangelical votes from McCain, he loses 59 million to 52 million and Obama has a fillibuster proof senate and a huge majority in the house.

McCain would have to be an idiot to select Romney as his VP. It is religous prejudice, but the truth is no Republican can be elected president with out evangelical support. And those 9 million evangelicals will not vote for a MORMON!

That's 46 per cent for Obama (including deceased and duplicate voters), 42 for McCain, and 11 more per cent for McCain once the undecided make up their minds. :') Thanks grellis.

Maybe you're right...frankly I don't know. I'm not an evangelical, so I don't know how they would respond. Assuming of course that your 9 million acting in unanimity figure is a bit of hyperbole, are the anti-Mormon feelings really that strong? Would they prefer a former Muslim(?) turned black liberation theology adherent? How about if McCain ran with a Jew?

Well, the party of Obama has single handedly destroyed the automobile industry in this state. First with unions, then destroying the SUV market.  And they still don't want to do everything possible to lower gasoline prices.  GM will be no more and yet these pinheads will continue sending fools like Carl Levin and Debbie StabAcow to Washington.

If I was an auto worker at GM getting ready to be fired, not laid off, I'm sure I'd be prepared to vote for Genghis Khan before I'd ever vote for another Democrat. They deserve what they get.

If a voter sees himself as an evangelical first and a voter second, he will not vote for Romney.

I’m an evangelical and I voted for Romney in the primary.

Doesn’t mean I don’t think the LDS churches teachings aren’t heresy, because they are, by definition.

But I’d rather have a heretic in the Oval Office than an America hating Marxist who attends a “church” like Rev Wright’s!

I have to wonder about that too. Would some Christian voters be turned off if McCain were to run with Cantor? I certainly hope not.

Mich. Congressman Pete Hoestra has been a very impressive CONSERVATIVE where Romney’s record has shown he is no conservative. McCain may want to consider Hoestra to get Mich votes.

I’m concerned about voter fraud. The more it looks like McCain could win the more I suspect the opposition will get it’s ‘act’ together.

A survey by Fox News/Opinion Dynamics conducted when Mitt Romney, a Mormon, was a Republican presidential candidate found that 32 percent of voters said they would be less likely to vote for a presidential candidate who is Mormon — while 45 percent said they would be less likely to vote for a Muslim.

A meeting was held about three weeks ago by over a dozen well known Evangelical Preachers they released a statement warning McCain that they would not support him if he chose Romney as his vice president.

I was a Romney supporter until I saw the polls. There were several that all showed that Romney could not get the Evangelical vote. And that was proved in several states. Romney pulled out of the race because his own polls showed he could not get Evangelical votes in any state except Michigan.

I was a Romney supporter until I saw that Fox Poll.

I know from many years of using polls in campaigns that when a voter says he or she is less likely to do some PC thing, there is not a snowballs chance in hell they would do it in a secret voting booth.

I’m confident about Nevada going GOP, and not much confident that Michigan will no matter what. Colorado is changing but in the end I think Big Mac can take it.

I suspect the opposition will get it’s ‘act’ together.

The most racially prejudiced people on this earth are the county chairmen in the counties that are all Democrat. They steal votes in predcincts where Republicans are afraid to go .. so all the poll workers are Democrats.

The problem for Obama is the leadership in the counties containing these precincts are white and racist. They will not help Obama steal the election. They could in fact help him lose it.
