A local blood center is trying to stock up in time for the Democratic National Convention.
Officials with the Bonfils Blood Center said Monday that the number of blood donations typically drops by as much as 20 percent during the summer months.
The annual decline in giving will coincide with the Democrats' convention, Aug. 25-28 in Denver, when it's essential to have a ready supply of blood in the event of an emergency, officials said.
"We definitely are taking steps to prepare for it (the convention)," said Jessica Maitland, Bonfils Blood Center's vice president of marketing and community operations. "We've had a request to basically ramp up our (blood) collections."
Maitland, though, predicted there will be plenty of blood available during the convention to respond to emergency needs. Maitland's comments came at an event where state Rep. Sara Gagliardi, D-Arvada, announced she would file legislation to lower the blood-donation age in Colorado to 16. Under current law, blood donors must be 18 or older or be a 17-year-old who has parental consent.
Gagliardi said changing the law would significantly help increase the local blood supply. "As Denver welcomes tens of thousands of guests (for the convention), additional responsibility will be placed on our shoulders," she said.
Gagliardi said 28 other states allow blood donors as young as 16.
Is that blood going to be screened for AIDS etc ????

Hmmm...a quandry. Give my blood to some stinking lib and he continues on his merry-but-confused way, or hope that some of my red cells infect him and bring some sense to his noggin...hmmm...
Their friends in all the abortion clinics have lots of blood they could send to Denver.
Bonfils should be required to publish the amount of blood that they discard every month. That would give perspective to their blood drives.
Does this mean I will have to empty my bladder and bowels before I leave my hotel room?
