All U.S. adults could be overweight in 40 years

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - If the trends of the past three decades continue, it's possible that every American adult could be overweight 40 years from now, a government-funded study projects.

The figure might sound alarming, or impossible, but researchers say that even if the actual rate never reaches the 100-percent mark, any upward movement is worrying; two-thirds of the population is already overweight.

"Genetically and physiologically, it should be impossible" for all U.S. adults to become overweight, said Dr. Lan Liang of the federal government's Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, one of the researchers on the study.

However, she told Reuters Health, the data suggest that if the trends of the past 30 years persist, "that is the direction we're going."

Already, she and her colleagues point out, some groups of U.S. adults have extremely high rates of overweight and obesity; among African- American women, for instance, 78 percent are currently overweight or obese.

The MSM continues with its “news” that include the words “could” and “possible” as if it were gospel.

All...wow that is pretty definitive. The only hope is the nanny state to limit our caloric intake by providing ALL of us with 30 dollars a week to eat on and keep the rest for the poor.

But wait, if we are limited to thirty a week wouldn't we all be poor? Ahhh...I see a trend here.

I just hoped the picture wasn’t obscene, I had to assume they were all wearing bikini bottoms.

If we really put our minds to it, I bet we could make in in forty days.

Don't forget that the government is always redefining "obese"...in fact, the last time, I think in 2002, after the new definition was published...

Arnold Schwarzenegger (sp?), John Elway, Troy Aikman, George W Bush, and Bill Clinton....

...all fit the definition of "obese"...in fact, close to 4 million Americans went to bed one night, and woke up the next...obese, simply by changing the definition....

That's progress!

If we keep redefining obesity and ideal weight by the irrational BMI scale.

It does not differentiate between men and women or between fat or muscle.

Yeah theres a shocker.. lol

If they keep lowering the standards as to what is considered “overweight” I’m pretty sure they can say everyone is overweight.

You can thank the flawed BMI for that one.

This also reminds me of the old Far Side cartoon, the scientists sitting at their stations, heads down, dejected...

the caption...

"It's official. EVERYTHING causes cancer"

This is slippery slope by governmental fiat!

Actually, completely nekkid healthy-sized women would be less obscene, IMHO.

In 40 years I’ll be 105 and obese.
Like I really care if I’m obese at 105!

eating a few boxes of donuts before going to bed didn’t exactly help, either...

“possible that every American adult could be overweight 40 years from now, ....”

Will they all be above average weight too?

Too Fit to Be President?
Facing an Overweight Electorate,
Barack Obama Might Find
Low Body Fat a Drawback
By AMY CHOZICK
August 1, 2008; Page W1

Speaking to donors at a San Diego fund-raiser last month, Barack Obama reassured the crowd that he wouldn’t give in to Republican tactics to throw his candidacy off track.

“Listen, I’m skinny but I’m tough,” Sen. Obama said.

But in a nation in which 66% of the voting-age population is overweight and 32% is obese, could Sen. Obama’s skinniness be a liability? Despite his visits to waffle houses, ice-cream parlors and greasy-spoon diners around the country, his slim physique just might have some Americans wondering whether he is truly like them.
