Global Warming
The Monticello News ^ | August 7, 2008 | Ted Dunagan

I’m fixing to clear up all this global warming stuff.

There’s definitely a warming trend going on. I have become very aware of that fact lately. I believe it’s called “summer.” I also believe the earth’s temperature has gradually risen, at least in our part of it, since sometime late in February.

There are folks about these days who claim they have the facts and figures that the earth is really warming to the point where it will have catastrophic results. They are the new breed of “Chicken Little,” and “The Boy Who Cried Wolf.” I’ve been aware of them and watching them something like 40 years.

They have a new tactic. I remember back in the 60’s when the same crowd, but more probably their predecessors, made their predictions as shorter terms. I mean a new ice age did not occur within the timeframe of their own calling.

And all the fish in the ocean didn’t disappear either. But now, they are pushing their time frames to 50 years or even beyond so they won’t have to be accountable when the time comes.

That way they can get their taxpayer paid grants from “just got to stay in power” congressmen and senators and keep working in their ivory towers doing studies and making calculations. These are people who think they are above producing goods or services, so they produce information based upon their own belief, opinions, the desires of their superiors, and most of all to keep their well paid positions secure.

The global warming crowd’s ultimate goal is to have laws passed to extort funds from big and small business’s in the form of what they call carbon footprints, or more simply put: paying for your destruction of the earth as you live and work. Of course business’s will just pass it on to the consumer. But remember, they want individuals to pay for their carbon footprints also, so we, the consumer would be stuck with paying both.

When Al Gore failed in his bid to become the first environmental president, he immediately set about the scam which enabled environmental advocacy groups to raise billions of dollars in contributions and government grants.

The scare has enabled politicians opportunities to pose as prophets of doom and slayers of evil corporations. And it has given bureaucrats at all levels of government, from the United Nations to city councils, powers that threaten our jobs and individual liberty.

It started with cars, soon we’ll be told what size refrigerators we can have.

Mother Nature is going to do what she wants to do when she wants to, and no human being should be fixing to have the audacity to say we can control Her.

This one is good, too!

Environmentalists’ Wild Predictions
By Walter E. Williams
Wednesday, May 7, 2008

Now that another Earth Day has come and gone, let’s look at some environmentalist predictions that they would prefer we forget.

At the first Earth Day celebration, in 1969, environmentalist Nigel Calder warned, “The threat of a new ice age must now stand alongside nuclear war as a likely source of wholesale death and misery for mankind.” C.C. Wallen of the World Meteorological Organization said, “The cooling since 1940 has been large enough and consistent enough that it will not soon be reversed.” In 1968, Professor Paul Ehrlich, Vice President Gore’s hero and mentor, predicted there would be a major food shortage in the U.S. and “in the 1970s ... hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death.” Ehrlich forecasted that 65 million Americans would die of starvation between 1980 and 1989, and by 1999 the U.S. population would have declined to 22.6 million. Ehrlich’s predictions about England were gloomier: “If I were a gambler, I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000.”

In 1972, a report was written for the Club of Rome warning the world would run out of gold by 1981, mercury and silver by 1985, tin by 1987 and petroleum, copper, lead and natural gas by 1992. Gordon Taylor, in his 1970 book “The Doomsday Book,” said Americans were using 50 percent of the world’s resources and “by 2000 they [Americans] will, if permitted, be using all of them.” In 1975, the Environmental Fund took out full-page ads warning, “The World as we know it will likely be ruined by the year 2000.”

Harvard University biologist George Wald in 1970 warned, “... civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.” That was the same year that Sen. Gaylord Nelson warned, in Look Magazine, that by 1995 “... somewhere between 75 and 85 percent of all the species of living animals will be extinct.”

It’s not just latter-day doomsayers who have been wrong; doomsayers have always been wrong. In 1885, the U.S. Geological Survey announced there was “little or no chance” of oil being discovered in California, and a few years later they said the same about Kansas and Texas. In 1939, the U.S. Department of the Interior said American oil supplies would last only another 13 years. In 1949, the Secretary of the Interior said the end of U.S. oil supplies was in sight. Having learned nothing from its earlier erroneous claims, in 1974 the U.S. Geological Survey advised us that the U.S. had only a 10-year supply of natural gas. The fact of the matter, according to the American Gas Association, there’s a 1,000 to 2,500 year supply.

Here are my questions: In 1970, when environmentalists were making predictions of manmade global cooling and the threat of an ice age and millions of Americans starving to death, what kind of government policy should we have undertaken to prevent such a calamity? When Ehrlich predicted that England would not exist in the year 2000, what steps should the British Parliament have taken in 1970 to prevent such a dire outcome? In 1939, when the U.S. Department of the Interior warned that we only had oil supplies for another 13 years, what actions should President Roosevelt have taken? Finally, what makes us think that environmental alarmism is any more correct now that they have switched their tune to manmade global warming?

Here are a few facts: Over 95 percent of the greenhouse effect is the result of water vapor in Earth’s atmosphere. Without the greenhouse effect, Earth’s average temperature would be zero degrees Fahrenheit. Most climate change is a result of the orbital eccentricities of Earth and variations in the sun’s output. On top of that, natural wetlands produce more greenhouse gas contributions annually than all human sources combined.

I have been saying this and more since the 70’s when they tried the global cooling scam.

Leftist lie - just a fact. Sadly today, our MSM are leftist now as well and do more harm then good.

In old days a scientist working for the government (going back 40 years) had very little credibility. (save perhaps nasa)

They were regarded as those who could not get a REAL science job in the private sector.

On this site, Cogitator for a while tried to defend the warming globaloney. Eventually he gave up because he was losing so consistently. Back when he was still arguing, I made him a beat that the rate of warming over the next decade would be 0.1C per decade or less, based on my analysis of the direct effect of CO2 and the unsupported silliness involved in amplifier and feedback claims trying to boostrap that into something more. He claimed it would be more like 0.4C per decade.

The news are in, and the sign is wrong.

We're already told what size toilets we can have, aren't we? The government has already told us how much water we can legally dump into a drain hole in our homes before we have to wait 30 seconds to do it again.

whenever anyone claims it is the warmest on record I ask the if they mean since the earth's crust cooled and hardened or since they invented the thermometer, and what temperature should the planet be?

I guess the global warming extremists never heard of pangea, afterall if the continents changed this much over time, how can they expect the temperature to remain constant?

after february, temperatures in the northern hemisphere began to rise, those in the southern hemisphere began to fall.

proof that climate variations, the proximity of the ozone hole to the direct rays of the sun, the increase in intensity of storms, hurricane katrina, and the selection of george bush as president have opened the way to catastrophic climate change which will end human life as we know it, will cause the entire earth to become a desert and then a ball of fire and destabilize the solar system and cause the planets to wobble off into infinity and cause the little dipper to become the big dipper and big dipper to become the little dipper and the sun to give off less light, less heat, allow the universe to contract and then increase in heat until it melts into blobs and allows republicans to have political clout which will cause the end of everything.

on the other hand, the election of the saviour, barack obama, will save the entire universe.
