Russia Rejects Cease-Fire With Georgia

Russia Rejects Cease-Fire With Georgia UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 9, 2008(CBS/AP) Russia refused to agree to a cease-fire or a diplomatic agreement Saturday, ensuring that the fighting with Georgia would keep spilling over to other regions such as Abkhazia's Kodori Ridge, where 15 U.N. military observers were told to evacuate.

"A cease-fire would not be a solution. The fighting is still going on. The Georgian forces are continuing to be on the South Ossetian territory," Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said. "All those actions and signals we have seen are not things which would not be conducive to a cease-fire."

As the fighting over the breakaway region of South Ossetia spread, the diplomatic standoff continued Saturday in the United Nations Security Council, which met for the third time since late Thursday night to try to help resolve the situation.

Negotiations were intense as the council dynamics mainly pitted Russia against the other 14 council members led by the United States, an ally of Georgia, who were pressing for a cease-fire that respects Georgia's sovereignty, diplomats said. Russia, the U.S., Britain, France and China are the five nations with council veto power.

At the core of this conflict is Russian mistrust of Georgia's western leanings and its desire to join NATO, reports CBS News correspondent Mark Phillips.

"This conflict is expanding, this conflict is escalating," U.S. Deputy Ambassador Alejandro Wolff told reporters.

Hate to state the obvious, but why would they accept a cease fire? They are winning.

I mean, Putin didn’t get authority from the UN, the Soviet..,um, I mean Russian government never gave him a declaration of war, there weren’t high level negotiations. Heck! Jimmy Carter didn’t even get called in to talk it over.

Who does Putin think he is?

Maybe Cindy Sheehan can go camp out near Putin’s vacation home for a month and get people to see how illegal this war is.

And the Russian excuse for bombing Georgian territory outside of South Ossetia (trying to get a ceasefire) has proven to be just another lie.

What kind of stupid remark is that? Did you ever think that the Putin bush knew then is not the Putin of today? Sheese. Lunatic.

This is 1945 all over again. Same playbook. Invade. Annex. Install puppet government. Kill any civilian opposition. Inslave civilians. Declare region part of russias "sphere of influence". Exploit any natural resources (in this case, gain control of the energy pipelines and black sea ports).

Because its the Russians, the UN will be even more worthless than usual. Any attempt at official condemnations or sanctions will be blocked by the Chinese.

It appears many in the international community are still trying to just come to grips with what Russia has just pulled.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. China must be mega-pissed at Russia right now. The Olympics are down below the fold in most major newspapers and that is definitely not going to go down well in Beijing.

This is supposed to be their week in the sun and Moscow is raining on their parade.

hmmmm...I’m betting that Putin and the boys are believing CNN and think Obama is going to be the next prez. Methinks they have started the party a little early...

"This conflict is expanding, this conflict is escalating," U.S. Deputy Ambassador Alejandro Wolff told reporters.

CNN reporting Putin will make a brief statement on the escalating conflict after the Olympic speed-walking competition between Mongolia and Zimbabwa.

Bush is currently attending the lawn dart competition, and had no comment as he entered the event.

The Russian agitprop networks are in full swing....

If Russia rejects talks to end the conflict for another 20 hours, the oil futures market will skyrocket, which will mean Russia will make more profits every day the war continues, compared to the expenses in operating the war.
