Part of Olympic display altered in broadcast

Fireworks over the Olympics pyrotechnics erupted when it was learned that part of the elaborate display broadcast to the world in the opening ceremony was altered, done digitally in 3-D computer graphics.

While the dramatic fireworks display actually happened as portrayed on television, members of the Beijing Olympic Committee said it was necessary to replace live video with computer-generated imagery because the city’s hazy, smoggy skies made it too difficult to see, according to The Beijing Times, which first reported the story.

Committee members also said they were concerned that the helicopter pilot who would have flown overhead to film the fireworks would have been “at risk by making him try to follow the firework route,” according to a quote from a committee member reported in a Daily Telegraph story.

It took planners almost a year to create the 55-second sequence which appeared to be more than two dozen footprints amidst fireworks in the sky, said Gao Xiaolong, head of the visual effects team for the ceremony, in the Daily Telegraph story.

Is it real or is it Memorex (apologies for the mixed technical metaphors)? Seeing is no longer believing. But, hey, its all a show anyway.

I am much more upset about the Olympic flag being carried by the goose-stepping ChiCom army.

I kinda recall hearing Bob Costas (or some other NBC flunkie) mention that on Friday.

I believe that the Chinese military tradition much more follows the Soviet Union.

You can kind of see it in the cav boots and the tunics.

Funny. When I saw that I said that it seemed kind of artificial, but I was so blown away by the entire event that I figured it must have been real. I also noticed when flipping channels that the Telmundo version of the games showed much more smoggy skies over Beijing than the NBC broadcast.

Must have been orchestrated by Dan Rather. Fake, but accurate.

Yes, they absolutely did say on the broadcast that it was not real. I remember hearing that as well.

He did in fact say that and anyone with a brain who watched it could tell that it was staged, but so what?

I still think it was one of the best, opening ceremonies ever. The thing with the guys in the boxes was pretty amazing.

.....and am I the only one whose cable reception goes all whacky??? Must’ve been a half dozen times that the signal gets all full of static and horizontal lines.

Interest in the Olympics has been very poor.

The Opening ceremony was attended by less than half as many people (91,000) as showed up to cheer Obama in Berlin, and the TV audience for the opening spectacular was only half (1 Billion) the audience that participated in “Live Earth” which Al Gore assured us on multiple occasions was 2 billion.

So it is obvious that left wing politics is vastly more interesting to the world than international sports.
