It sounds like SOMEBODY got through to them on the backchannel and told them, “You REALLY don’t want to risk all-out war with certain allies of Georgia, do you?”.

I hope this development is true because I’ve been tossing and turning at night for the past 2 days over this...

CNBC has been reporting it — with about the same amount of detail as in the article blurb at the head of this thread...

Sarkozy is on his way to Moscow. Russia has no intention of leaving two provinces and says the Georgian president must go.

Not sure how long a ceasefire will last under those conditions.

They demand the resignation of Saakashvili and intend to annex Ossetia and Abkhazia.

So, I wonder if they are going to give him 24 hours to get out of Dodge, and if he stays, resume decimating Georgia. Russia has it's sight on more than Georgia, that's for sure.

Judging from other reports (BBC and another from a reporter from Norway) Russia really started to expand outside of the disputed regions earlier (like in Zugdidi and Senaki). I think at that point someone must have given them a stronger warning and they’re backing off to the borders of the disputed regions.

President Bush Discusses Situation in Georgia
Rose Garden

Video (Windows)
White House News

5:21 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: I just met with my national security team to discuss the situation in Georgia.

I am deeply concerned by reports that Russian troops have moved beyond the zone of conflict, attacked the Georgian town of Gori, and are threatening the Georgia’s — Georgia’s capital of Tbilisi. There’s evidence that Russian forces may soon begin bombing the civilian airport in the capital city.

If these reports are accurate, these Russian actions would represent a dramatic and brutal escalation of the conflict in Georgia. And these actions would be inconsistent with assurances we have received from Russia that its objectives were limited to restoring the status quo in South Ossetia that existed before fighting began on August the 6th.

It now appears that an effort may be underway to depose Russia’s* duly elected government. Russia has invaded a sovereign neighboring state and threatens a democratic government elected by its people. Such an action is unacceptable in the 21st century.

The Georgian government has accepted the elements of a peace agreement that the Russian government previously said it would be willing to accept: an immediate cease-fire, the withdrawal of forces from the zone of conflict, a return to the military status quo as of August 6th, and a commitment to refrain from using force. There are representatives of the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe currently in Moscow seeking Russia’s agreement to this peace plan.

Russia’s government must respect Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Russian government must reverse the course it appears to be on, and accept this peace agreement as a first step toward resolving this conflict.

Russia’s actions this week have raised serious questions about its intentions in Georgia and the region. These actions have substantially damaged Russia’s standing in the world. And these actions jeopardize Russians’ relations — Russia’s relations with the United States and Europe. It is time for Russia to be true to its word and to act to end this crisis.

Thank you.

END 5:24 P.M. EDT

*Georgia’s duly elected government

“Yeah, like the Russians can be trusted......”

That’s what I’m thinking. Hopeful but skeptical. Not only that, but according to Mark Levin, the Russians had colonized those provinces, stealing the land from Georgia. That explains a lot. The Russians should move out of Georgia’s land.

Hmmmm...

And exactly what was the ‘goal’ of this exercise??

I’ve got a nagging suspicion that this is classic Cold War gamesmanship — reinforcing the ‘lesson’ that Iran taught in the recent Hezbollah takeover in Lebanon:

“Don’t count on America”

Russia orders end to operation after bombing of media centre
Times Online ^ | August 12, 2008
Posted on August 12, 2008 3:03:09 AM PDT by Schnucki

Russian warplanes bombed the Georgian city of Gori overnight, hitting a media centre and killing a Dutch television journalist who was in the city to cover the invasion.

At least four other people were killed in the bombardment, which began as the Georgian army and most of the city’s remaining inhabitants fled Gori in disarray believing that Russian troops were about to take the town.

Meanwhile, Georgian authorities said that Russian fighter jets had once again attempted to bomb a strategic oil pipeline, Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan, which carries fuel from the Caspian Sea to Europe via Georgia.

Georgia fears that the Russian army is now preparing to march on the Georgian capital Tbilisi and topple the government of President Mikhail Saakashvili. An explosion was heard in Tbilisi this morning, heightening fears that Russian MiG fighter jets were about to bomb the city.

Russia dismisses this, saying that the thousands of troops, tanks and artillery that it has poured into Georgia’s two breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in the last few days, and the incursions that they have made into Georgian sovereign territory around them, are merely intended to prevent Georgia from attacking South Ossetia again.

This morning Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian President, appeared to have ordered a halt to the military operation.

Mr Medvedev said that Russia’s military had punished Georgia enough for its attack last week on South Ossetia. “The security of our peacekeepers and civilians has been restored,” Mr Medvedev said. “The aggressor has been punished and suffered very significant losses. Its military has been disorganised.”

The Russian President said that he had, however, ordered the Russian military to continue to defend itself, and to quell any signs of Georgian resistance.

“Obama commanded Russia to turn back the tanks. And so it was.”

First came the rider of the White Horse. He spoke of bringing peace. And he never sweated. He lifted an air pressure hose and behold! A vast wind arose, and oil spurted from the ground beneath his sandaled feet. The Russian tanks fled before his greatness.

The horror. They disorganized the Georgian military. More like the Georgians have regrouped into a tenable defensible position around the southern Caucasus range. Obviously the Russian planners had calculated that the Georgian army would be destroyed before it could reach that defensible position.
