THE NATURAL Resources Defense Council Action Fund has taken out full-page ads in this newspaper and others to decry offshore drilling for oil as "George W. Bush's Gasoline Price Elixir" that is "100% Snake Oil." The environmental group calls on supporters "to stop the giveaway of our coasts." It is urging visitors to its Web site to send a pre-written letter to their members of Congress that says, "I am not buying the lie . . . that sacrificing the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and America's coastal waters to oil drilling would make a real difference in gas prices -- either today or twenty years from today!" And the missive adds, "With just three percent of the world's oil reserves, our nation simply doesn't have enough oil to impact the global market or drill our way to lower prices at the pump."

Having thusly stated the Watermelons' caes against drilling, the Wa. Po. proceeds (mostly) to gut it. Really a good read, espcially considering how liberal Wa. Po. usually is.

Only a brain dead liberal can believe that drilling for oil doesn’t get you more oil.

Unfortunately, the '(mostly)' qualification includes the echoing of the 'ANWR is off-limits' theme. Keeping ANWR off-limits has a double consequence: as the Prudhoe Bay oilfield depletes, a lack of oil flow in the Trans-Alaska pipeline will eventually render it unmaintainable and it will have to be abandoned.
That would have dire consequences, and is completely due to the stranglehold that the envirowacko Luddites have on the 'Rat congress. What a disgrace.

I would rather “give away” some oil then give away my Constitution and my free government.

Has anyone outside the Albuquerque metro area heard the radio commercials talking about Big Oil Bob and Health Insurance Hal? They talk a bunch of BS then direct you to visit a web-site (can’t remember the name). They’re so blatantly full of BS, but I’ll bet a lot of folks fall for it.

The "just three percent of the world's oil reserves" comment is intentionally deceptive. The guys at powerline (
http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives2/2008/08/021214.php ) were discussing oil and noted that oil in the ground is not counted towards reserves unless it is: 1) evaluated as profitably recoverable under current economic conditions, and 2) accessible under current regulatory schemes. The only reason the reserves are so low is that the Democrats have placed the vast majority of our oil resources off limits through regulation and legislation.

You got it!
The only time we see normal people humoring the extremists in our midst is when we can afford to ignore them.

According to the MMS, between 1993 and 2007, there were 651 spills of all sizes at OCS facilities (in federal waters three miles or more offshore) that released 47,800 barrels of oil. With 7.5 billion barrels of oil produced in that time, that equates to 1 barrel of oil spilled per 156,900 barrels produced. That's not to minimize the danger. But no form of energy is perfect or without trade-offs.

Just the mention of off shore drilling has dropped the price down! When will these A$$holes understand!!!

No, they are buying the lie that allowing domestic production of oil to increase would require "sacrificing the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and America's coastal waters."

The numbers are relative, no one really knows how much is down there.
By going in and "relieving the pressure" of undersea wells, perhaps we can clean up the oceans by reduce those underground seeps?
If the Greenies weren't just a bunch of stupid little tarts, that would have been the first thing to come to mind after seeing the above pie chart.
