BATON ROUGE -- Some call it a blood sport. Others call it a way of life. But whatever the view, as of Friday cockfighting will be illegal in Louisiana, the last state in the nation to outlaw it.
Those on both sides of the battle to end the spectacle that pits roosters with razor-sharp gaffs on their feet in a fight to the death, concede that the law will not eliminate the practice, but only send it deeper into the shadows.
"You will have people saying they are going to keep fighting their roosters, " despite the law, said Chris Daughdrill of Loranger, president of the Louisiana Game Fowl Breeders Association, the cockfighters trade organization. "People who have been in it forever and forever will stay in it."
The 2007 Louisiana Legislature adopted two statutes aimed at ending cockfighting: one by then-Sen. Art Lentini, R-Kenner, made gambling illegal at cockfights as of last Aug. 15; and one by Rep. Harold Ritchie, D-Franklinton, outlaws the activity at the end of this week.

I am and have been pissed off about this.
I’m from Louisiana and grew up around cockfighting, the cowardness of the Louisiana legislature appalls me. There was no reason for this ban and appealing to the sensitivities of people who aren’t from there isn’t good enough.
But don’t you think, Raymann, that animal cruelty is animal cruelty, no matter where you are or where you come from?
Some practices cannot be looked upon favorably just because they are deeply ingrained in a “culture”.

I agree, culture should never override morality.
But morality is based on protecting the rights of the individual. Animals aren’t sentient being and therefore have no rights, they’re property to do with as we please.
It strikes me as blatant hypocrisy that we have no problem killing a billion chickens a year to eat but flip out when a few die from cockfighting. We have no problem with the former precisely because of what I mentioned but why do some people insist on using a completely new and disjointed morality when it comes to cockers?
The Democratic Party just wrote sodomy in the military into their platform. Pretty soon it will be the law of the land.

Had I known that I would have visited the state more often. Love cockfighting. I have a nasty scar on my right hand from handling an ‘armed’ fighter once.

Abuse a kitten or a puppy in front of a police officer or in front of the police station and see what happens. It may be your opinion that they are “property” to do with as you please but the law would disagree with you.
Oh good, I still have time to run over to Louisiana to take in a cock fight. Hope they have one going on, maybe at the superdome Thursday evening.
