President Bush has directed the U.S. military to lead a humanitarian mission to Georgia where tens of thousands have been forced out of their homes following a Russian invasion last week that has been described by Georgia's president as an "ethnic cleansing."

A U.S. C-17 aircraft with humanitarian supplies already has arrived in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi and another C-17 will arrive there Thursday with additional medical and humanitarian aid, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said after the president's announcement.

Speaking from the White House Rose Garden with Defense Secretary Bob Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Bush said the aid mission will be "vigorous and ongoing." He warned Russia not to interfere.

I’ll add a, “God Bless Our Military” as well.

How about putting in some military aid destined for Israel onto the same plans and intentionally-inadvertently unloading said cargo in Georgia?

I think we should do the same to Tibet as well. I don't know why everyone chants "Free Tibet"... a better slogan is "Arm Tibet".

OK, so if it is so vigorous, why does it take a day to get a second flight in? And, why in the heck should we have to pay for supplies to patch up people and things that the bear damaged?

Probably cause we don’t have an C-17 anywhere near there and it takes time to gather, load and fly the supplies in.

Oh, I see the air quotes. I said on another thread that I wish we were sending in our “humanitarian” marines.

So do I, God Help Us.

Does anyone else think that we encouraged Georgia to undertake a suicide mission by attacking S. Ossetia, just so that we'd have an excuse to go to war with Russia?

Terrific, the American fighting man once again forced to being just another employee of Meals on Wheels.
WTH is the UN?

Good! He should send military aid.

He is being tested by Putin and his responses are being closely watched by our enemies.

Of course not. IMHO, that’s like saying we bombed the Towers to start a war with Iraq.

Russia has done things like this all throughout its history. My Dad lived through World War II and has been telling me for years that Russia was just biding its time until it started trying to take over Europe again.
