More than 30 American black bears have been sighted in Known as Ursus americanus and native to North America, there are some 600,000 black bears across Canada, the United States and Mexico, but the large populations of northern Mexico are dwindling to a only a few thousand as deforestation and cities destroy their habitats.
The bears, with black fur and brown muzzles, stand often over 6.5 feet (2 meters) tall, live off plants, fruits and nuts, as well as carrion. But deforestation and droughts in northern Mexico can force many bears to seek food in rubbish dumps on the edge of cities such as Monterrey.
Attacks on humans are extremely rare.
President Felipe Calderon has made ending Mexico's acute housing shortage a central focus of this presidency, vowing to build 1 million homes a year.
Nuevo Leon state and its capital Monterrey make up about 7 percent of that target, or about 70,000 news homes a year.
With excavators gouging out chunks of mountainside and pushing into the national parks that surround Monterrey, activists say corrupt politicians are allowing developers to build in protected areas.
State officials deny any wrongdoing and real estate promoters say they are meeting infrastructure and housing demands in a growing city with the necessary permits.
"We have been demonized as developers but we are working within the law. If building in mountains was such a terrible thing, Switzerland wouldn't exist," said Everardo Garza, head of Nuevo Leon's real estate chamber. (Editing by Philip Barbara)

Less than 2% of illegal aliens are picking our crops, but 29% are on welfare. Over 70% of the United States ‘ annual population growth (and over 90% of California , Florida , and New York ) results from immigration. 29% of inmates in federal prisons are illegal aliens.

Are the American Black Bears eating the garbage that Mexican Black Bears won’t eat?
At least the bears are American citizens.
The Mexican economy is doing well because so many U.S. factories have moved there, and all the illegals here taking U.S. jobs are senmding their money to Mexico.
As for the Reuters description of what bears eat, it is wrong. Bears also eat other species, not just carrion. In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park the bears are preying on the young elk that have been stocked as part of the elk reintroduction project.
It has hampered the project to the point park officials have relocated bears from Cades Cove so the elk have a better chance of survival.
These Mexican bears, if fairly close to the border, will migrate, unless they get too used to eating the garbage there. They always look for easy food, and when people and bears exist too closely, there will be attacks. We had another here last week, and have had two fatal attacks in the past 10 years, one a hiker who was stalked and eaten by a black bear.

I can think of dozens of reasons to oppose criminal illegal aliens, but anything to do with bears isn't one of them
In fact any ding-dong who raises any isues involving animals versus humans better realize that the humans will win every time in my book.
Call it a tiny compensation responding to mindless animal activism and PC...
I think it’s rather interesting that Mexico cares more about bears than it does their own people. But not surprising.
I also think it’s quite special that Mexico’s economy is in such fine shape. You’d think their people would go home.
I rather preferred when our $ was worth more and Mexico was the bargain basement, not the USA.
